Modem Errors - Excess Power & Dynamic Range Window Violation

Over the past week I was having a problem with modem dropping to 90mbps DL. After a reboot it would connect at 900mbps but then 15-20mins later it was back down to 90mbps. While diagnosing this issue modems were swapped with no change. Changing the ethernet cable between modem and router seemed to resolve it. But looking at modem event log I have a bunch of excess power events followed by dynamic range window violations. I'm wondering if I should be concerned and whether I still need a technician to look into things?

    Dynamic Range Window violation

    I think the simplest explanation I have found is this;

Dynamic Range Window Violation is an issue that occurs when there is a difference in the dBm (decibel milliwatts) values between the uplink and download channels of the network signal.

If a ranging request is sent from your router and it returns with a 12dBmV difference, it can upset your network connection as this value is greater than the lowest permitted power level for the upstream channel set.

I don't think they are directly service impacting, but are often followed by T3 errors, which are.

OK Thanks for that explanation. I do get occasional T3s like this morning there were 2. But prior to today I haven't seen a T3 for 4 days.

Just rounding back to follow up with Cox to troubleshoot this.

You might want to delete one of your posts since duplicates. Also, can you post your signal levels?

Sorry. This first post was flagged as spam so I posted a second time with the same results. I'll delete the second one and post power levels.

In my other thread... which I can't figure out how to delete... you mentioned...

"The T3 timeouts are more of a concern. Are you signal levels OK? Specially the upstream. Also, I see a reset signal being sent. Was that you troubleshooting with Cox?"

I think the levels are good? But when I was troubleshooting the slow speed issue with Cox, I mentioned the Excessive Power events in the event logs to the Cox rep who told me that indicated a problem with my modem and that I needed a new modem. But after getting a new modem I was still have the same problems. That's when I started looking into my speed with a laptop connected directly to the modem and was able to get full speed and lead me to identifying the ethernet cable as the suspected source of my slow speed.

My speeds have been solid for most of the day now but I'm still wondering based on the logs if I still have any underlying issue to be resolved?

The reset was from changing modems on my account... I had Cox add my old modem back to the account since the new one isn't needed.

Got a few of these later in the day...

Date Time Event ID Event Level Description

02/28/2023 15:24 82001100 5 "RNG-RSP CCAP Commanded Power Exceeds Value Corresponding to the Top of the DRW;CM-MAC=(redacted);CMTS-MAC=(redacted);CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.1;"

02/28/2023 11:06 82001100 5 "RNG-RSP CCAP Commanded Power Exceeds Value Corresponding to the Top of the DRW;CM-MAC=(redacted);CMTS-MAC=(redacted);CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.1;"

I'm guessing this means the power levels have increased to now exceeding the top?
