How to setup Guest Network w/Panoramic TG1682 gateway

Each and every query on the subject has begun on https://www.cox.com/internet/mywifi.cox, logged on to my account.

Have many times been to the Cox page, the *only* Cox page, which even mentions the word "Guest" (https://www.cox.com/residential/support/view-primary-and-guest-networks-with-my-wifi.html). On that page, under "Manage Settings", is listed "Update your wireless network name and password, manage your network security and enable a guest network all in one convenient location" , but I have yet to discover a way to actually take advantage of this setting feature. Am beginning to get the impression that it's a dead end.

Would greatly appreciate learning of any constructive experiences from forum members.

  • chaloots,

When you access www.cox.com/internt/mywifi.cox do you have access to your device's settings or does it say the following?

"It looks like you are using a modem that is not compatible with My WiFi. My WiFi is included when you rent a WiFi Modem from Cox. My WiFi is coming soon for Cox provided Netgear WiFi Modems."

Currently logged on to https://www.cox.com/internet/mywifi.cox. As of this writing there are three tabs visible: Internet Info, Network Settings and Device List.

Under the Internet Info tab both 2.4 and 5Ghz Guest networks indicate that it is turned off.

Under the Network Settings tab there are also two slider settings to turn Guest Network on or off. Clicking on the Advanced Settings link affords more options such as Setting Band Channel as well as other Wireless Security choices. It also offers the on/off sliders for Guest Network.

My apologies for stating initially that I was up to now unable to alter Guest Network Settings. What I'd really like to know is where or how to learn more about what's recommended before activating either or both Guest Networks. Surely there's more to it than the toggling of a slider switch.

    chaloots,

If you are trying to decide if turning on the guest network is a good idea, that is at the user's discretion. You should make sure if this will be an open network or if there is a passphrase on it for security measures as well.

I agree wholeheartedly. What I'm in search for is supporting documentation/recommendations from Cox on the subject. As I understand it now, yes, there is a setting which allows an administrator to toggle Guest Network on and off. To those users like me who have this available to them for the first time I for one would like to know more about the pros and cons of such a settings alteration.

Where in Cox can I hope to find them?

    chaloots,

There are pros and cons to a guest network. The quest network would be used to give someone access to your WiFi without having to share you password to your network. You will also be able to determine what sites that your guest visit while using your network. Please take the time to determine what would be best for your situation when deciding if you are going to turn on the guest network at your location.

OK. I've got you. Understood. I've learned more about Guest Network setting in this short dialog here on the forum but my point remains that there appears to be little-to-no documentation, support or guidance provided by Cox to assist subscribers in the better understanding and use of this tool.

Maybe it's like trying to find a QOS setting on the TG1682 (I've tried; can't find it). Presumably it's a tweak that either Cox doesn't wish their customers to discover or mess with and have as a precautionary measure disabled on this particular gateway. If that's the case I can also understand, but it's quite another matter IMO to display Guest Networks settings and expect users to already possess the necessary knowledge to make the best use of this setting.

So if it's a question of "There's the Setting, make use of it what you will but don't expect *any* guidance from Cox because there isn't any", say so and admit it, or kindly direct me to where I might be able to educate myself more on the intricacies and nuances of the setting for the TG1682.

    Respectfully, that's all I'm asking.

The information you are requesting isn't supported by the service. You can find more information about guest networks online or on the router's website. This is true for other internet questions like customer's who what to set up port forwarding. We don't have any information about why someone would want to set up port forwarding but we do offer the ports that are blocked for security reasons for incoming and outgoing traffic. We can advise how to manage the features but we can't state why one would or wouldn't what to use this feature. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

If I'm understanding you correctly, the un-hidden Guest Network feature is pretty much a "Use At Your Own Risk" option.

Out of curiosity, would my subscription to Cox Complete Care Plan be of any help in this matter?

Saying to use at your own risks would imply that there is a possibility of harm or danger. There's no harm or danger to using this feature and it is there for customers to use if they choose. I see Cox Complete Care covers connecting a new device to the home network and ensuring the home network is secured and protected. I'm not able to find anything specific to guest networks. You can call the support line at 1-877-COX - ASST (1-877-269-2778) to get any additional information.

  • Cox Cable won't help, and I called Arris, and they won't help either. Cox said I could talk to one of their geeks.

it looks like they want to be paid to help.
