My netgear nighthawk router is not connecting to the modem

Connected my netgear Cm1100 and nighthawk AC 1900 router cant connect to the internet. Have restarted several times and Cox said they show a connection. My laptop doesnt have an ethernet port so any suggestions?

should i try another router?

    Try to reset all of the devices including the laptop at the same time. Can you see the Wifi network names on the laptop list of available networks?     Netgear has pulled a fast one on their customers. The CM1100 "shakes hands" with the faster Docsis 3.1 protocol. But the hardware in the cable modem is obviously Docsis 3.0. It cannot handle faster speeds.
