When this happens, you can sometimes advance frame by frame until you get past the bad spot. It won't fix your issue, but it could allow you to view the remainder of the episode you're watching.
Tried but it locked up the DVR and now have had this problem on 3 programs, I don't think this is just a DVR problem. On the last lockup tried to reset the DVR by getting Cox to send a reset signal and it says my area is in an outage for all services, so obviously posting this is impossible.

A few months ago, I had the same issue with DVR playback you described. Internet and phone services were not affected. A tech analyzed my signal and determined there was either a problem with the tap (at the pole) or on the main line. However, Cox didn't tell me which it was. I didn't see anyone from Cox climb the pole after it was diagnosed. Either the tap was repaired or replaced and I just missed seeing the tech or it was a main line issue that was corrected. I haven't had the DVR playback issue since.
If it's a problem with the main line, several of your neighbors will be having issues too. If the problem is at the tap, one or more of your neighbors next to you may have issues.
You should request to have a tech check your signal. Be sure to specify the tech have signal testing equipment and a long ladder so that he/she can test the tap. The contract tech that checked my signal arrived without a long ladder and had to call another contract tech to bring one so that he could climb the pole.
