@Bruce and @WiderMouthOpen You guys are the modem experts so I have some questions.
When I see a reference to DOCSIS, it seems vague. Isn't that kind of like saying I have Windows? That could be XP, Win 11 or anything in between. Shouldn't you specify the version of DOCSIS, the same as you would for Windows? From what I've read, DOCSIS 3.0 specs are 1 GB down and 200 Mbps up. But, DOCSIS 3.1 has been around since 2013 with specs of 10 GB down and 1-2 Gbps up... big difference (if your ISP actually provided those speeds). DOCSIS 4.0 specs of 10 Gbps down and 6 Gbps up were issued in 2019, but haven't been used in any released products yet. Apparently, down speeds will max out at 10 Gbps for the near future. So, gamers, I guess you'll just have to accept that it's gonna take you at least 6 seconds to download your 60 GB games.

Here's my other question. I understand a coax modem would be a theoretical choke point for fiber. What's the real benefit of swapping a DOCSIS 3.1 modem for an ONT? Wouldn't it just be investing for a potential future when Cox offers theoretical speeds higher than 1 GB down and whatever their "up to" limit is? What are people doing anyway that needs speeds faster than DOCSIS 3.1 10 Gbps down and 1-2 Gbps up?
