COX Throttling to Game Servers Continued Thread (last one was locked)

Another post was locked showing a tracert to Chicago with a very high ping jump.  That thread was locked, I am a different user and wanted to continue that thread discussion because I am having problems as well.  I am in Orange County and have used both Spectrum and Cox to the same game server in Chicago.  I get around 30ms ping to the server with Spectrum, but 75 ms ping with cox.  The relevant tracert route is below:

3 9 ms 10 ms 9 ms ip68-4-14-76.oc.oc.cox.net [68.4.14.76]
4 12 ms 9 ms 9 ms 100.120.104.8
5 55 ms 58 ms 57 ms chgobprj01-ae0.0.rd.ch.cox.net [68.1.4.42]
6 65 ms 65 ms 67 ms ip70-167-150-114.at.at.cox.net [70.167.150.114]
7 66 ms 70 ms 66 ms 104.160.131.46
8 67 ms 68 ms 68 ms 104.160.131.103

As mentioned in the previous thread, the route to Chicago is definitely taking awhile and someone in that thread commented that it is normal.  However, Spectrum takes the same route distance but does it a lot faster indicating that the Cox infrastructure is the culprit or maybe there is some throttling.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • I’m having issues with streaming to twitch and Cox isn’t helping me. I’ve talked to twitch and stream labs obs, they’re all saying it’s cox that needs to fix their *** and yet no one wants to do anything. I’m about to move just so I can get a better ISP

Oh it's definitely Cox. I've been running smokeping and pingplotter for 2 weeks to figure out what is going on. I've discovered that Cox connection cannot handle any sort of upload. It creates massive latency issues. So streaming to Twitch or what have you is out of the question. This is coming from someone with Gigablast. 1000 down and 30 up. Even limiting the upload to 5mbps results in huge latency spikes. They are just overloaded and refuse to do anything about it.

@Glefever2181, our network provisioning and engineering practices are designed for you to receive the speeds that you're subscribed to. I am not detecting any packet loss on your modem currently. Additionally, fluctuations in latency within connecting networks outside of Cox’s network, such as gaming servers, is beyond the scope of our support. This is because the packet loss does not occur over our network. However, we definitely want to investigate this issue further.

Are you on WiFi or on a hard-wired connection when experiencing slow speeds or packet loss? Are all devices affected or does this issue only happening while gaming on one device? -Kevin M. Cox Support Forum Moderator

twitch seems to have their own protocol of "how to's" but are quick to say it's a cox issue.

      good luck something better.

well it is a cox issue, the routing system they have is really bad. Any aws game server bad packetloss, netflix and vudu are also affected and many more.

  • @Gfunk4698844, It looks like you may have something going on after hop 4 on this trace. Please have a device run traces to the game server, google, and yahoo for comparisons. Also, what game server are you experiencing this issue with? Lastly, please respond back with the complete trace from hop 1 on. -Allan, Cox Support Forums Moderator.

That hop is Cox Atlanta. I have issues with massive latency spikes with them as well and i'm from Florida. Are you guys going to fix it or is this going to be status quo?

@gfunk4698844, While I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary regarding these traceroutes, I am detecting some signal issues with your modem. We recommend sending out a service technician to investigate further. To schedule a service appointment, please include a link to this forum thread and email us at cox.help@cox.com. -Kevin M. Thanks Kevin, there seems to be pretty good routes to some servers, but certain Cox routes seem to be pretty slow compared to Spectrum in the same area.  Is that because Spectrum has some areas with better infrastructure?
