SmartHelp, not that helpful.

I’ve been on smart help multiple times, everyday this week trying to figure out why my WiFi is inconsistent. I recently got a new modem in the mail and increased my plan. I thought since I increased my plan and received a new modem that my WiFi would be faster, but it’s AWFUL.
I’m pretty young and capable of fixing these things myself, I’ve done all I can to try to make my WiFi work, but it’s not. I’m not sure how to move forward without just canceling my subscription to Cox.

  • AllyU Hi, I'd be happy to help. Please send me an email at cox.help@cox.com and include a link to this Forums post along with your full name and address. Thanks!

Ensure your WiFi modem/router is out in the open, located in a central place, and raised as HIGH as you can. It should not be under or behind anything.

Also ensure it's not near fluorescent lights, or located in what is called a "Smart Box". A smart box is the WORST place for a router, (think Faraday Cage).

Many times I helped people who had their modem behind their TV, one of the 3 worst places to place a Wireless transmitter.

The higher you place the Wifi Router, the better. The fewer solid objects the WiFi has to go through, the better the signal, the faster the WiFi.  Every solid object the signal goes through reduces the signal level, as does distance. That's why the router needs to be in a central location.
