I am also old school, I wrote the first Machine Language terminal program for the C-64 that would do 2400 baud, and had several programs published by Compute Magazine, as well as writing software that help run several types of BBS systems. I also know my modem commands still, as I was a test Sysop running a BBS with a US Robotics modem under their beta program. I informed you about the "motorola" modem, because it's not. the hardware is sub par when compared to the Surfboard line that the REAL Motorola manufactured, and I would NEVER use Zoom's equipment. I remember their smoked plastic covered 2400 baud modem from the day, and their hardware has remained sub par to this day. If I wouldn't use it, I certainly would never suggest someone else do, which is why I suggested the Netgear.
Now as for provisioning the netgear simply call cox, in my area it's ATDT 7572221111, and I get their call center, I get internet tech support, and provide them the serial # and MAC ID, and the modem is online in minutes.
Addendum, AT commands are Hayes modem commands and not used to communicate over serial connections to other devices. Their ONLY purpose was as an "AT"tention Command to a Hayes or Hayes compatible Modem.
