Problems with Cox email and -- SPAM -- prepended to subject

All the mail comiong from one domain (our congregation) gets --SPAM-- prepended to the subject line, and when we try to reply, the email will not send with an error of:  Message could not be sen...

If that is an actual email address, you should edit your post to mask it to avoid publishing someone's email address in a public Forum.
