Connect RT-N56U to TG1862G

Can someone PLease guide me in the right direction

Trying to make this connection, a RT-N56U to TG1862G. as of the why the RT has a USB option I will like to use. I connected the RT-n56 to the Arris. but it doesn't seem to be working. I can't access the router at all by entering its IP address. any info will be greatly appreciated.

  • Good morning Tiffany, first of that you for taking time to help a person in need. Fyi bare with me if some of my terminologies aren't industry standard.

Before we start I want to provide a mental image of my setup. So you could see where my mistake is at. Modem TG1682G Lan #1 feeds the Netgear N300 router, which to my understanding what is used for my COX alarm.

So far I'm able to go inside the GUI of the RT, and I'm able to communicate with it change parameters and even went as far as updating the firmware to the latest one for the RT. After doing this I've connected the RT to the N300 LAN #3 to get a signal from it since the 4 connections from the TG are all been used. After doing this the RT gets it IP reassigned, to my understanding this new IP # reassignment I could be used to enter the settings. This is where I'm hitting a brick wall, with that new IP I can't enter the settings from the browser. I've even gone as far as using the "Asus device discovery utility" to configure and get an error "Your computer and your wireless router are on a different subnet mask. Ensure that the IP addresses of both your computer and your wireless router are on the same subnet mask".

This is so far where I'm at.

  • It would probably be easier to connect the RT-N56U directly to the 1682 if possible . You are behind 2 different routers when connecting in your current fashion and that can throw a wrench into things especially since the N300 settings aren't configurable for customers.

  • That makes sense I will try this today, and provide feedback. do you think is possible to then connect the N300 to the RT Lan instead. what are your thoughts

  • Bryan thank you, I did what you suggested but it seems the 1682 it's not allowing the RT to communicate. This why I think, I can jump on the N300 settings using the 192.162.x.x. So far that works without a hitch. But when connecting the RT to the WAN connection on TG-1682, this is what I get:

This light is on the RT. Also when trying to access the GUI on the RT I get this message:

This picture is using the asus finder

When I try to enter the GUI using the configure button I get this message

Hopes this gives u a glips of my issue

  • It sounds like both routers (1682 and RT) may run very similar settings as far as the IP addresses etc.  Did you change the IP settings of one of them in order for them to be able to communicate properly? (preferably the RT so in case you had to do a hard reset to the 1682 for any reason, you would not lose manual settings)  These pages, although not official Cox pages, may help explain it better https://www.wikihow.com/Cascade-Routers  or http://www.corenetworkz.com/2008/02/router-to-router-cascading-simple-guide.html

  • I will try this today, it seems that the 1682 assigned the new IP to the RT. So the follow-up question is, should it place the RT on a Static IP.

Thank you for all your info

  • Yeah, I would probably set that one to a specific IP address.

  • I was able to to find my problem, just like suggested by creating a static Ip. and all is fine know all I have to do is find where port forwarding is on the TG1682
