Extreme increase in data usage
Since I have renegotiated my price my internet data usage has spiked to more than 2X my previoususage. I added the additional 500GB of data so I wouldn’t go over and now this month I am on trend to use more than the 1TB + 500GB. I’ve changed my network password and name, even factory reset it. No new devices or software are being used. Has anybody else experienced this? I’ve spoken to tech support over the phone and they’ve been utterly useless and suggest I up my plan AGAIN to the unlimited. I feel like Cox is doing this to me on purpose!16KViews0likes12CommentsClass Action Lawsuit for Data Overage Fraud
How many people would be interested in a class action lawsuit against Cox over their fraudulent data overage charges. Personally we had a massive increase last month over any other month with no different usage on our end. There were multiple days when we were out of town and still managed to use 50GB in that time. Customer Service uses the same canned response for everyone. They try to blame it on connected devices (we had none) or someone using our wifi. Their excuses just don't add up. Connected devices wouldn't use more data than days when people are actually home using the devices. And I'm not living next door to some rouge hacker that's capable of breaking my password. Also, if someone was stealing my wifi, why would it spike one month and go down the next? Did they just feel like not using it anymore? It's time that we stand up together and get past their BS responses. Their data reporting is not accurate, so they shouldn't be allowed to charge extra fees for phantom data usage. The only reason they get away with this is because there are no other options in a lot of cities. This can't continue and needs to stop now!4.8KViews1like10CommentsMy Data Usage bug
We consistently average around 30 GBs per day, but got notified this morning (21 days into the billing cycle) that we are almost 250 GBs over for the month. After checking My Data Usage, it shows that the average for the first 20 days is consistent, but yesterday (10/03/2020) was 1,090 GBs just for that one day!!! We were outside almost all day, and didn't stream or download any more than a typical day. There is clearly a bug w/ Cox's data usage tracking. See below for images of our daily usage as reported by Cox. Is anyone seeing anything similar? I've already been on chat w/ two level 1 support reps. The first one, "Shireida J.", had no clue what I was talking about, said she would create me a ticket, but after about 20 minutes transferred me to another level 1 support rep (without even telling me). The second one, "Miah D.", verified that a ticket had not been created and had no idea why I was transferred. Current month https://ibb.co/8sQ8Cht Previous month https://ibb.co/ysjvKtX Thank you to anyone who can help.4.6KViews0likes12CommentsCox data usage discrepancies
I have been noticing major discrepancies in the Cox data usage meter. It is my understanding that this is a 3rd party vendor doing it for Cox. I have been communicating with their help/support team, but to no avail. Unfortunately, they do not seem to have any real tools to investigate data usage discrepancies. Understandably, they try to put it back on the customer. On my side, I have a data usage monitor on my secured router and watch all devices and the data used. My problem: We have used the same amount of data for over 15 years with Cox. Average is 20 Gigs per day. Then, at the end of my billing cycle there is an unexplained data spike with over 600 Gigs in 2 days. Now, this cost me an extra $80 because it put me 400 Gigs over. Of course, they put it on the customer with usual responses on unexplained data usage. The reason I question the Cox data usage monitor is that Cox showed that we only used 2 Gigs yesterday. Ever since the huge spike, I have been watching the router data usage and the Cox data usage like a hawk. Yesterday we used at least 8 Gigs of data. This is in my favor, but really shows an issue with the Cox data usage monitor. I communicated this back to Cox, but again to no avail. I know they think their 3rd party vendor has verified the service, but there is an issue. Unfortunately, every time I communicate with them there is not much they can say or do since they have no real tools to investigate. I put a ticket in with Cox, but they only said the 3rd party vendor showed my IPDR data the same as Cox. Not really addressing the complaint. This only shows that the data they sent to Cox matches, but does not touch on the issue that the data is discrepant. I am seeing unexplained huge spikes and unexplained extremely low data usages. I wish they would really look into the issue. If the 3rd party vendor is providing Cox invalid data then this is bad for Cox since they are charging customers based on that data. This is really bad for the customer having to pay for invalid data.4.5KViews0likes4CommentsUnexplained Data Usage Spikes
I have noticed some very weird spikes in my data usage meter. On November 21st the meter reported I used 1,425GB of data, up from my general average of 10-15GB per day at most. Had to call customer support and have them credit back the $100 in overage charges, as it was clearly an error and I had even remembered that we didn't even stream any television or music that day. The representative mentioned that he had several calls with similar concerns, and that there must have been a bug in the system or something. They also suggested I change my WiFi password, which even though I know the network hadn't been compromised I obliged. Fast forward to today, I notice that it shows on December 13th that we used 182GB which although less is still quite the spike from our general average. Once again, I had obligations that day and wasn't even home most of the day. I wish I had more internal data regarding network traffic but unfortunately I don't. Has anybody else noticed any odd unexplained spikes?3.4KViews0likes6CommentsHow does Cox measure data "usage"?
I've been dealing with a spotty connection for the past few weeks, well, few months really, but the past few weeks have been exceptionally bad. I've noticed that during the periods of Cox network failures my data "usage", as shown on their website, is significantly higher than normal. During these periods it also deviates significantly from the throughput logged by my gateway, which is both fairly consistent day-to-day and more representative of the expected network load. My assumption is that this is due to retries initiated by the modem. There have been a huge number of un-correctable errors logged by the modem across a number of channels during these periods, so that seems to support my theory. Does anyone have any insight into this?1.6KViews0likes2CommentsData Caps are not balanced in 2020
Hello. Data Caps are absolutely a joke. They're systems put in place to simply generate more money. In 2020, almost EVERYTHING is online, taking up bandwidth. Right now, countless people are going over their data caps during this pandemic and Cox is collecting on them like the mafia. If you think $50 ADDITIONAL is fair for this packet loss ** service, stop reading. Data caps are extremely unbalanced. I just went to check on my data usage, and its over 1tb again. I shouldn't have done it to myself, but here we are because of your practices COX. I wanted to see if i was hitting my data cap and if i could simply download something without going over. And guess what lol, I hit my data cap, and, well, i still want to simply download something. I want to use my service that i pay $100+ a month for. I don't want to pay $10 per 50 gb to continue to use my service. In what world is this not an insane, mafia-esque tactic? Maybe Trump's America and with Ajit Pi's damage, but lets not even go that far. How in the world is it not insane, with some of these frivolous game downloads are 100gb +? So, if I download 5 new games, i hit about 500gb. Thats half of my data cap for 5 big games. Thats not streaming or actually playing them either. Thats half or more, GONE, just from using my service normally. Then those same games have updates that can also be 100gb. So now there's 5 updates a month, thats another 500gb. Thats my data cap lol. AND THEN we have streaming movies, the bandwidth it takes to actually play the games etc. It makes absolutely no sense. In anyway. At all. Ever, in 2020. You have to be the thickest headed person in the world to think this is any semblance of fair, or someone who makes money from these practices, or Ajit Pi himself. It is absolutely infuriating. I can't use my service normally. A big game comes out in a few days: Cyberpunk. Right now my data is at 1000gb. And I'll be downloading Cyberpunk. And that will probably make me go 100gb over my data cap. And that will run me $10 per 50gb. So potentially $20 just to download a game. Not to buy it, but to download it, to use the service which i already pay for. Simply raise the data cap or remove it entirely. There is no way 1tb is a fair and balanced data cap in 2020. There is no reason to make people feel ill over their data usage. There is no reason to make people pay an additional $50 to use their $100 service normally. Imagine not really having $50 to simply hand over out of the blue (and before someone says 'what about the money you spend on the games,' lol, i'm most concerned with the games i've already bought, deleted to make room, and now download again to play). I'm not a person who wouldn't miss $50. I need that $50. You obviously dont and you obviously know that. I want the least stress possible, especially from an INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER. I don't want to think about if a download is costing me $20-$50 for something I already own... Some day it'll change but until then, guess I'll just keep feeling ill over the situation, in the midst of a pandemic, while you make money from it. Here is the $20 I owe you for the 100gb patch that automatically downloaded overnight while i slept. I'm sorry, I should've payed more attention. Oh, there's another option? $50 for unlimited? So I can pay $20 extra or $50 extra. What about the third option where I already payed you $100+ for the month of service, and I don't have to cough up more?918Views0likes1CommentHigh data usage on one day
Hello, my tracker is showing I have one day with extremely high data usage at 291 GB, meanwhile all the other days are at around 23 GB and Cox is giving me no explanation on what caused this. Anyone know how this can happen? I barely watch tv, do not game, work computer was off, and my cell phone was not connected to the internet.763Views0likes2CommentsData Plan Notifications should be more frequent to prevent overages
I'm sorry if this comes across as rude but if I'm going to be subjected to the clearly unnecessary policy of data caps then Cox should at least have the courtesy to give more frequent notifications for overages. Right now we only receive a data cap at 85% and 100%. Of the 1 TB "allowance" we get every month, 15% of that is a whopping 150 GB. I guess they think that is enough headway for someone to scale back their usage for the month, but that is a huge amount of potential data usage that goes to waste. Unless someone tracks their own data usage carefully, let's say at the router level (which I am definitely going to be doing from now on), then it is really difficult to know when you are approaching the actual 100% limit. A notification for data usage at 90% and 95% would be much more bearable for me. Cox has a monopoly in my area so its not like I can take my business elsewhere (yay Telecommunications act of 1996), but I just wanted to get my frustrations out there.755Views0likes1Comment
