Data Light Yellow

Data light on my Contour Box is a steady yellow, beginning yesterday. I reset it and it went off.Today when I turned it on it was back to yellow. This is reported on DSL Reports as well. What gives?

  • I have had the same issue for almost a week.  I have tried everything in this thread without any luck over the last week.  My assumption is that Cox is causing this issue if so many people are experiencing the same issue over the last week.

  • Same issue here in Chandler, AZ.  The light came on yesterday and disappeared by daybreak only to return later this evening. I checked for new notifications and I had none. Going to use a black marker to cover the bulb....it's an easier fix then waiting for someone in IT to come up with a fix. 😜

Hello, I apologize for the delayed response. As of 11/01/19, this has been escalated to our Engineering Team, and this issue is being tracked and closely monitored. In addition, we are still monitoring this issue here in Social Media. We appreciate your patience as we continue to work through this. -Kevin M. Cox Support Forum Moderator
  • @KAM82  My guess is you didn't read this entire thread before you posted.  I suspect that pesky yellow data light will be back on tomorrow.

This is a known issue with the XG1 Receiver on both Cox and Xfinity. I believe Arris is working on a firmware update fix to be released fairly soon. The best fix for now that KEEPS the Data light out is to go to Device Settings then turn the Power Light Brightness to 0 (zero/off). Leave it there. The Clock will STILL work. The Data light will not come back on even if you turn the box off then on again. You will just have to use the box with the power light off. No big deal. This will keep the Data light off also. Obviously, you will know the unit is on when your TV is working. You will still be able to turn the box on and off with the front panel power switch manually. You can also turn the box on with your remote or off by using the voice command "Power Down" then selecting the on-screen option to shut down now. I tried everything else and this is the only thing that keeps the Data light out. Please note that this solution will also turn the red record light off. Recording functions will still work, however. I will update this post if the Data light returns again after a prolonged time. The Power Saver setting makes no difference. I am sure this will only be a temporary issue until the firmware update arrives. I hope this helps.

Black tape might be easier to undo when Cox eventually fixes this issue.

Hi Mike, please do not use a marker to block the light from the receiver. I have escalated this case and will follow up with you when we receive additional information. -Kevin

I finally got my amber/yellow "data" light to turn off (after weeks of failed attempts) by cycling through the settings for the power button light in Settings->Device Settings->Device Lights.

Cycle the Power Lights Brightness setting from your current setting through Off and then back to desired setting. This forced the Remote, Data, and Record lights all to cycle/blink with each setting change...and the Data light subsequently stayed off.

Worked for me (somehow), hope this helps!

I followed the procedure but the yellow light reappeared this morning...

Hopefully Cox will simply fix the issue soon...

Thank you for your proposed solution, I tried it yesterday, and  worked. When I woke up this morning, guess what? The yellow light came back. We need help from Cox technical support to solve this persistent annoying problem.  HELP

This is a known issue that is being looked into. You can also leave the device lights off completely to avoid seeing it at all.

This did work for now.  I guess we'll see if the light comes back!

Mine is doing the same thing. I can't find anything about what ti means or how to clear it.

  • Hello. The data light typically is seen when the box is downloading information. This can happen whenever the box needs to update. How long is the yellow light on for? Are you unplugging the power to the cable box at night? -Allan Cox Support Forums Moderator.

Had the same problem and unplugged box to reboot. That didn’t work so I called  Cox on 10/4/19. They sent a signal to the box, the light went off for 24 hrs and it’s now back on. While I talked to the phone help they mentioned they might have to send out support help if this didn’t work. Won’t call for out help since I really believe the software needs a redesign. Even if I exchanged the Contour box all I would get is a refurbished one anyways. Have been with Cox for 24 years so I kind of had got use to these problems.

I wouldn't waste my time with having someone come out. Clearly it's a system problem.

It is on continuously as long as the power to the box is on. This is like day 4. No, I don't unplug the power at night!!

I have the same thing going on with mine. Steady yellow light on the data box. Nothing else seems amiss except the box is a bit slow to react at the moment. Is there a big update going out that takes this many days? Or is there a widespread problem?

It means you have a message waiting. Read, delete the message and next time you turn on TV the yellow light is gone.

I suggest checking the notifications to see if there are any messages waiting.

I’m in Irvine, Cali.  Yellow light came on Friday and stayed on ever since.  Everything else is normal.

Cox knows about the issue but based upon the various replies here, there doesn't seem to be a known solution.

As long as you are not experiencing any service issues, I wouldn't worry about the LED display. -Kevin M. Cox Support Forum Moderator

It's not like continuing to drive a car with a warning light on.  Cox will probably figure out what's causing it and fix it eventually.  In the meantime, if the DVR is otherwise working, it may be time to break out the duct tape and just cover that offending light.

I have the same issue. Mine started about two weeks ago. I looked the issue up and found where if there's a notification the light will be lit. Checking I did have a notification. I cleared that and the light went off for about a couple of days, but now it's back on but there aren't any notification or anything pending. Resetting the box (twice) did not solve.

Anyway, having just got off the phone with Cox's tech support they had no clue. I got everything from the box is recording to "its normal for the yellow light to be on". In fact the person I spoke to wasn't even aware of a yellow light. But somehow miraculously, they somehow knew it was "normal for it to be on all the time"

Anyway I see I'm not the only one with this weird issue so... and as noted, there are no performance issues so...
