Selecting some, but not all, emails
How do I select emails 1, 3, 7 and 9 from my "List" view?

You can restore the check boxes in Settings (gear icon). Without check boxes, you can select email-1, hold the Ctrl key (or Shift, I forget) and then simultaneously select multiple emails.
