Question for you guru's

I'm 80 years old and my son (in another part of the state) has access to my security cameras when he wants to check up. With this new software update he can no longer connect to those security cameras and I can no longer assign or see my cameras port numbers anymore. So.... If I buy my own gateway and router will I still be under COX software restrictions or will I be free of it? All my ports are not on the restricted list.
