Getting Real Time Virus Scan vs On Demand

Im not exactly ignorant on computer issues but I am no IBM specialist either.  I recently changed systems and thought about getting REAL TIME virus scanning on my devices.  We are older people and dont use our computer/laptops much- mostly phones, so we dont have an endless data plan.  We get 125 a month for data.  If i get real time- will this draw from my data 24/7 / 365?   I hate to put out that money and find out it drains our plan before the end of the month,   Any ideas?

  • Hi Dsertdog. Yes, real-time virus scanning can potentially impact data usage, but the extent depends on how it's configured and the specific antivirus software used. You can usually adjust the settings of your antivirus software to optimize data usage. For example, you might be able to exclude specific files or folders from real-time scanning, restrict when updates occur (e.g., only during Wi-Fi), or choose a less aggressive scanning mode. Thanks, Lisa, Cox Support Forums Moderator

Real time scanning can be accomplished with the right Antivirus/antimalware software. If you are using a Windows computer, Microsoft supplies it's own version of software that is free, runs in the background, and scans your computer, as well as incoming data. It doesn't use DATA on your internet plan, with the small exception of updates, which uses minimal data.
