email server error message [EOF]

I tried to send an email and received an error message: mail transport server [EOF](-1-[EOF]).

Does anyone know what this means? Email worked fine last night.

    I can't send either.  The last 5 times this happened, Cox was working on their servers.  There was nothing you could do to fix it. We had to wait for Cox to get it straightened out.

    Whatever the problem was, it works now. A heads up from Cox would be nice.
