This does a decent job laying out the pros and cons of using a VPN server.
The article brings up an interesting point about logs. I don't think it's a matter of keeping logs...but more about who can access these logs. Good providers have servers overseas to avoid court orders. If someone suspects you're up to no good on a stateside server...[knock, knock, knock]. Of course, this would be a very big "if."
