Hi Trey, thanks for your question. If there is an active coax outlet in the location where you'd like to move the gateway, you can move the device yourself. Just connect the coax cable to the gateway, plug in any ethernet-connected devices, and plug the power in last. Cox technicians activate existing or non-wired outlets for a charge. This rate includes all materials, including the cable, splitter, fittings, and wall plates. We can also install a new outlet for you, if there is no outlet where you want to set up the gateway. There are some limitations based on where you want the outlet; an inside wall versus an outside wall, for example. why is placement not in the center of the house? I noticed initially they drill into the brick 30 feet from the wire hookup box into the last room instead of drilling up into the attic where they could have access to the living room (center of house)?

Why didn't you mention the placement when the technician installed it? If you caught it within 30 days they could have set it up as a re-install, which is both free and dings the technician for having to come back. Also, they usually won't wall fish and won't always go into attics, specially if it's hot out.

To answer your question on why, it really depends on how your house is set up. The technician will usually pick the path of least resistance unless you specifically ask them otherwise. If you didn't want to pay for the technician, you could have always ran the coax yourself or paid someone else to do it.

Hi Trey, to build on what WiderMouthOpen said, where a modem/gateway is installed depends on many factors. Where in the house will members of the household use internet-connected devices the most? Where is the dmark? Is the house one story or two? Where are the current coax outlets located? Where does the homeowner request the gateway be installed, and is it an inside wall or an outside wall? Those are just a few of the questions I'd ask before installing an outlet.
