Is the coax line a straight connection from the wall to the box? If there is a splitter on the coax line, I recommend bypassing it, temporarily, to see if that resolves the issue.

Your cox installer should have checked the signal level at the box. If it was only 3dB from dropout he should have installed an amplifier to bring the signal up. Maybe you should check to see if your fittings are tight and check if the box is plugged in as well. Or maybe cox could tell you what things might cause the problem you are asking about.
Something like: It sounds like you might have low signal level on those channels. Is it always the same channel or does the "temporarily off air" change? Have you changed any of the cabling since Cox installed the box?
or
There are x things that could cause that problem.
1 Low signal on that channel.
2 (another actual cause of the problem)
3 (another actual cause of the problem)
4 (another actual cause of the problem)
etc.
I am pretty sure there is a way for a cox tech support operator to tell what signal level the box sees. So maybe a call to tech support might be in order.
