Ping & Packet loss [Megathread]
Collecting the threads where people are saying they have ping and packet loss issues. Unlikely that this wide spread problem is caused by a "router", "signal issue" or "bent cables" (unless somehow everyone's cables got bent over night across the country? Santa Claus?) These problems are ranging from California to New Orleans, Arizona and Nevada between. I know these are unusual times but also sending technicians to check cables or trying to blame modems, house cabling for the issues doesn't help. What can you do: Install PingPlotter (14day trial) and start collecting data. 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 are Google's anycast DNS servers that should be optimized for latency. You could also try to ping cox.net, zoom.us, google.com or try to find your game server addresses. Try to collect several days of data to see how the service degrades in certain peak times Post the results here and email cox.help@cox.com with the data and your issues/location etc.See if you get an answer or anything helpful to address. In some cases they want to send technician over but if you already had technician check your signals or cables, it's likely not going to help If the problem persist, consider filing informal FCC complaint as azchips didon his case Cox, what can you do: Escalate these issues to your manager/director customer support who can then escalate it further, hopefully up to the CEO/whoever is the director of Cox Communication. Acknowledge that the issues exists and communicate to customers what is happening, what you plan to do and when. Email customers affected or post in this forums or on twitter. Launch your own investigation to the network look for bottlenecks, speed up your upgrade plans if you can. Even after this crisis, we are likely to see increase in businesses and consumers internet usage. Focus improving the latency in the overall network. This is what most people are complaining about it. Since affects how fast new connections open, dns requests get resolved, and providing good experience for applications that require stable and constant connectivity (video calls, ssh, gaming). First of all, I never had this issue before but now its here. I am trying to play a game but my game would stop dance or rubberband a lot. I know its packet loss because im testing it. I would send 149 packets I received 130 back, therefore packet loss. I'm calling the IT help but they always say the same thing. Call the manufacturer of your modem because it might be a hardware issue. But before their claim your basic IT help always say my modem is working fine green good connection. And I know its working its just the packet loss. So, I said please send me a technician to come and look around my area why I'm having such a stuttering connection. Guess what? The basic IT help cant even submit a ticket to provide an appointment because you're assuming its my modem? Plus it seems like your IT help doesn't even know what packet loss is. I have to explain twice what it is. How hard can it be to ask for a technician when it is my right as a customer? I'm paying on time and im paying it full. I am sure im not alone with this issue. Problem seems to have started popping up last tThursday, but since then my house seems to have periods of time where the network speed slows the a crawl andI'm barely able to use the network (and definitely unable to run any multiplayer games). I've tried a bunch of different simple fixes but to no avail, so I'm at a loss on what I should try next. Setup information: Modem/Router: AC1750 Wifi Cable Modem Model Wiring: Underground, resedential neighborhood Affected Connections: Wired and wireless Normal Speeds (wired): ~50 to 100 mbps download and 30ish upload Speeds during a bout of slowness: ~0.3 mbps download and 0.6 mbps upload What I've tried already Resetting the modem/router (on my end) Factory resetting the modem/router , netgear admin page shows connection is 'good' Unplugging the modem/router and waiting 3-5 minutes to plug back in Resetting the modem/router (on coxs end) Disabling wireless and testing only my wired connection Useful info? Hello, As the title says, I have been suffering from severe lag and latency spikes almost constantly when playing online games with Blizzard servers. The time of day doesn't seem to affect it and doing generic router restarts doesn't make a difference. This has been going on for several weeks now and it is becoming unbearable. Has anyone else also experienced extreme packet loss and huge latency spikes over the last 8 months? I have put in a total of 17 tickets with Cox at this point and its the same exact story every time where someone comes to my house looks at the cables and tells me there is nothing wrong physically. I tell and show them all of the packet statistics i have captured over the last many months. They then tell me they will give me a call after talking to their engineers and I never get that call. Here I am at 9:00 PM still having issues after providing more proof than any customer should have ever provided. I know for 100% sure the issue lies on whatever the first hop is from my modem to whateverrouterthat it connects to. This is not a physical problem it is the equipment that cannot hold up to the bandwidth that is being pushed through it. I do not want anyone coming to my house again I just need a network engineer to please at least address this issue for me. Hello. I have been experiencing random latency spikes all throughout the day and evening on my internet service. At first I thought the issue was my cheap netgear router, so I replaced with an Asus RTN66U, still having issues. It is really annoying, especially when gaming. The last latency spike session, I ran a tracert towards a League of Legends Game server, see imgur link below. As you can see, latency changes as soon as it leaves my network. I should also note, that speedtests indicate I have a 60Mbps up/ 6Mbps down connection when there is no lag. Issue started ~6mo after a storm in my area and I've reached out to the techs at COX but no one has been able to help me out. Since then, I have replaced my modem twice, reset & updated my router and tested another router as well, replaced my Ethernet cable & the COAX, reloaded OS, installed an Ethernet card in my computer and the issue still persists. It persists throughout the day until late at night after 1am and in that time there are only 3 devices active on the internet. Hello, everyone. My Preferred service was installed in the beginning of August. Everything was great and smooth with the exception of some random connection drops. A little over a week ago, I started experiencing very frequent latency spikes that have been greatly affecting my internet phone calls as well as online games. I visited the local COX Solutions Store, and they offered me to switch out my gateway to see if that was the problem. I told them, "First, let me reset my gateway, then I'll come back if that doesn't fix it." Today I switched out the gateway and I'm still having the latency spike problem. I have three other computers in my apartment that are all having the same issue. I started getting huge latency spikes, and with an approximately 3 year old modem, decided to upgrade. That didn't solve the issue. Well, the issue existed with the previous modem I owned and this brand new one and they're both on the certified COX modem list.
