Based on your DVR model 8742HDC, you have Cox TV (Contour 1). The ability to schedule from the Contour app or watchtv.cox.com is available for all Contour (Contour 2), but it doesn't work with Cox TV.
Did you happen to find any place where Cox documents this? Also, can a moderator confirm?

That has already been posted twice on this thread, and it doesn't relate to what you need to record remotely via the app. It just says what hardware is capable of what service type. Am I missing something? Can you explain?

No, it's another process-of-elimination. Becky said schedule with the app or watchtv.cox.com is available for all DVR customers, but I know from personal experience it doesn't work with Cox TV. Cox doesn't document what Cox TV does or doesn't do. We are Cox's unwanted stepchildren.
So, are you saying it doesn't work with Cox TV AND Contour 1? Or is Cox TV the same as Contour 1? Is the solution as easy as OP getting different boxes?
Cox TV is Contour 1. It's the original Contour. When Cox converted to the current Contour platform, people began referring to the previous version as Contour 1 and the new one as Contour 2. But the word "Contour" isn't found on any Cox TV screen (guide, settings, etc.). Take a look at the digital receivers page. The service type is Cox TV and/or Contour.
Yes, if OP is willing to replace his Cox TV receiver with Contour, he'll be able to schedule recordings with the app or on watchtv.cox.com. But I don't think he'll do that and if he does, he may soon regret it. I'll never willingly give up my Cox TV receiver for Contour (Contour 2).
