Hi Chele, try the following process to sync the DVR:
Press the Contour button on the Cox remote.
Highlight the Gear icon and press OK to access the Settings menu.
Highlight Device Settings and press OK.
Highlight Sync DVR and press OK twice to begin the DVR Sync.
After the sync process completes, reboot your receiver by unplugging the power for 2 minutes and then plugging it back in. Give the receiver time to complete the reboot process before accessing the DVR menu, and then try to delete the recording. Are you successful? -Becky, Cox Support Forums Moderator

Unfortunately, that did not work. I've heard about a reset that may have to done?

I'm sorry attempting to delete the recording from the Host DVR hasn't worked. You may attempt to reset the receiver through our website: www.cox.com/.../resetting-your-cable-receiver.html.
If after the reset is sent and you still cannot delete the recording, then the next step would be to replace the DVR. Replacing the DVR with another would result in losing all saved recordings.
