No vim, I don't think so. This new mail app requires some retraining. If deleting is your mind set, you have to pick one email you want to delete, that will uncheck everything else. THEN click in the check box anything else you want to delete and then click trash. That will put only the ones you want to trash in the can. You'll get the hang of it after a while.
But yes, since last July I've done a lot of fishing trash out of the can.
