If you are indeed using Chrome, look at the section titled Add a Web-Based Email Service to Google Chrome for Handing Email Links for more information on what to change.
Have you actually used this method for Cox webmail? Seems complicated. I think it would be easier to use a email client. Good suggestion though.

I was actually going to try it but forgot I let my Cox email expire.

I don't have Cox email either. It's is slowly dying as more and more people disconnect service. Even if they come back the email address is gone and can't get a new username. It's only a matter of time that the user base is so small that Cox doesn't want to pay for it anymore.
