I find a attenuator is better and usually cheaper. Less likely to fail. A 2way splitter only raises the upstream by 3.5dB while a attenuator can 3/6/10dB.
true, but for most people, getting your hands on a 2 way splitter is easier/quicker/cheaper. Many people have one laying around. I could probably scrounge up 2 or 3 right now. Either way whatever one he gets and uses, it will be interesting to see what the results are, the upstream can handle a longer signal, but downstream, yeah, that's a bit hotter than I personally would have liked to see when I was in Tier 2. When I saw something that hot, I rolled a truck.

Yea, I was suggesting a technician too but wanted something for OP to try before the technician arrived. Do the Cox stores have attenuators and splitters?

I don't know about the attenuators, but I do know they have splitters.
