Hijacked email address

Today is the second time i've received a bunch of 'undeliverable mail' that I did not send (emails to people in form of a statement saying they owe money).  I've changed my email password, notified cox who informed me that I probably have a virus or trojan horse, et al on my pc.  I have run the cox security pack antivirus mcafee software, plus two other AV programs.  My pc and network are clean... yet i continue to get undeliverable mail and also mad email that was delivered from people who realize the emails are a hoax.  This is only happening with my cox email.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Does anyone have any suggestions re how to (1) shut down the access this criminal has to my account here, and (2) prevent it from happening again?  It really bothers me that some people they've emailed may be falling for this scam and sending money to the designated snail mail address.

Example of the email from an undeliverable returned email:

not reachable within the allowed queue period. The amount of time
a message is queued before it is returned depends on local configura-
tion parameters.

Most likely there is a network problem that prevented delivery, but
it is also possible that the computer is turned off, or does not
have a mail system running right now.

Have you changed you password to something it hasn't been before? Do they still occur if you shut your PC down?

I've changed my password about 3 or 4 times, each one something totally different than i've ever used before (changed so many times b/c i would get two different change confirmations - was only expecting one and thought the hacker may have followed behind and changed after i did.  have no idea, but thought better safe than sorry). The first round of undelivered mail came last wednesday; today was the second.  I haven't shut down my pc in this time frame but i have rebooted a couple times - when i installed the cox security suite and with another program update.

What did you have initially for antivirus? Installing a anti-virus after possible infection doesn't help. I would first shut the PC down and check your email from a cell phone/etc and see if it continues. If not, I would work on doing some anti-malware scans.

Ok, was just making sure you weren't using multiple active Antivirus. Sorry I wasn't of more help.

@Harluna,

Sounds like you may have a trojan or bot that keeps getting into your email.  Changing the password is the first thing we recommend in this situation.  Have you scanned your computer(s) at the home checking for viruses, malware, trojans, etc?

Hi DerrickW,

I've changed my email password a few times to totally different/new/never used before passwords.  Initially when i changed my password, I recieved a confirmation email from cox which i was expecting.. then another from cox a couple minutes later that i was not expecting so I changed my password again.  That was on wednesday.  At that time I also checked windows defender which was reporting no problems.  Went to Trendmicro website and ran the free scan, which also showed no problems.  I had notified Cox of the incident, and was informed that I may have a trojan so I downloaded the Cox Security suite (which i never realized cox offered until this happened).  I downloaded/installed that mcafee program, then scanned and again mcafee says no problem with my pc.  Everything was good between that day (wednesday) until this morning when a fresh new batch of undelivered email replies showed up in my inbox again. I changed my email again, and then posted here.  I have run McAfee again, which says no problems and in process of running Microsoft Windows Malicious software removal tool.    This is as far as i've gotten today.

Are you using a wireless router?  You may need to scan your router as well to make sure there is nothing there causing you to have this issue repeatedly.  Do you check your email on another device besides your PC?

Yup,

Could be a key logger program/malware.  Malwarebytes may a good direction to go to ferret out any issues before doing anything from your computer... also a find and install decent firewall.

This is kind of brash, but maybe try calling the people sending the spam? Ask them why they are stealing your email? I use google voice and make anom calls(test numbers) all the time.

This has happened to me.  The spam said that the recipient's bank account had problems and asked them to click on a link.  Anyone looking at the email would wonder why a major bank had my email address as their return address.  I got help from Cox Support (i called them).  That tech notified the ISP where the spam was originating and told them about it.  That helped.

Go into your email account using Classic Email (not Enhanced).  Look for the button that says Classic. Click on the blue SETTINGS tab.  See if you have any Blocked Addresses that you didn't enter. That can tell you if someone got into your account.
