Enhanced Error Results

Hello, when I first started with Cox internet I opted out of the "Enhanced Error Results",  now it has been re-enabled, please explain why this has happened and is it something I can accept to see in the future.

If you go back into the settings where you first opted out, are you still opted out? If so, try opting in then back out? Also, anyone know how the opt-out feature technically works? Does it push something to your modem? Now that I think of it its kind of mysterious.

A more direct work around would be set up 3rd party DNS on your network on PC's. Here are instructions for Google DNS, but there are other 3rd party DNS options out there.

It was deselected, I would like to know why it happen. it was my understanding that opting out was permanent. Setting DNS on each of my devices is not realistic give them amount and complexity of my network ( I run CCNA labs and a VPN).

You can set up static DNS on your WAN and point everything to that. As for why it changed, when did it happen? It's likely a technical glitch, perhaps something to do with the fact the site is down for some? According to this page, the opt out should be permanent without even a way to opt in. Has it happened more then once?

Edit: derp. I just read the last reply. Good find. And it seems to be true. When I go to the opt out link, the page says:

Opt Out

You have already opted out of the Enhanced Error Results service.

with no other options...

I called tech support to no avail. Why must an ISP provide a useless service? I hope they are getting mad cash from Yahoo for this nonsense.

I did some digging and found the opt-out is attached to the IP assigned the MAC address it a white list system. From what I can understand that white lists have to be updated every-time your IP changes. So while there is no cut off date for the opt out it is not permanent.

Vote with you wallet and don't use their DNS. Great thing is you can use any DNS you want. DHCP just provides suggested, it does force it.
