Motorola SBG6850 firmware update?
I installed a new Motorola SBG6850 modem recently. It works for the most part, but it drops connection every few hours and has to be rebooted. The current firmware version is 3.1.0.0. According to Motorola, firmware updates must be pushed by the ISP. According to Cox chat support, "We do not provide firmware updates. I do apologize for this inconvenience. I suggest you to replace the modem if it is causing this issue because It should be under warranty time." Does Cox not support firmware updates?7.1KViews0likes3CommentsSBG6850 lag issues.
I've had a SBG6850 for some time now and recently (Nov/Dec?) started experiencing lag issues. Our VOIP becomes unusable, extreme lag in on-line game play. Power cycling the modem resolves the issues for a day or so, The issue can be seen by ping'ing an IP address on the WAN, e.g. a DNS server. Say for a particular IP ping -t reports between 40 and 55 ms normally. When the problem occurs, every few seconds or so, the ping will jump up to 300, 500, or more ms and then drop back down to the normal range. The problem continues until I power cycle the modem. ARRIS (formerly Motorola) provided a replacement modem with new software on it which I installed last night. The cox rep I talked to said they don't update the firmware on these that's why the prior modem had such old firmware. Well, we know that's not right, cox does update the firmware. But then I read elsewhere that you don't downgrade a modem to older firmware. Yet, when I checked my modem this AM, it had been downgraded 5 major revisions from 8.x.x.x to 3.5.8.4. I still don't know if the problem will or won't happen with this firmware version since it takes a few days to happen. Is there a way I can stop cox from downgrading my firmware? Is there a way for Cox to host a more recent version. From what I can tell, the UI on the 8.x.x.x version was many orders of magnitude better then 3.5.8.4, and I was hoping the performance would be better too.
