Let's Encrypt can't work on Cox
I just want to restate that Cox blocking port 80 started out as an "okay" idea for security but has become the exact opposite. All Cox-provided routers have a firewall, and the majority of people not using Cox hardware have their own firewall because that is their preference. In my case I want to use Let's Encrypt to provide certificates for my firewall, and Cox makes this impossible by blocking port 80. Please read up on the ACME spec and see if you can do something for it. Regards, Mike487Views2likes1CommentCox Gateway Port Blocking and macOS
I am trying to use VMware on my Mac to connect to my work VM. Every time I try to connect I get an error that the connection has timed out. If I use my iPhone as a hotspot instead of WiFiI can connect with no issues. Googled and found that it is probably blocked ports on the Cox side. I did set up port forwarding using the Cox WiFi app and I still can not connect. I have tried a bunch of different ports the last ones I tried are 443, 4172, 8443, and 22443. Hi all, I'm setting up port forwarding to get remote access to a home desktop and have verified functionality by disabling the security service to allow port forwarding. Couple questions related to this - 1) What are the implications of disabling this service? The my-services-disabling page warns that you'll lose "24/7 threat monitoring and real-time reporting." Does this include IP-Reputation blocks or are those always made regardless? Any other valuable features besides the audit log (and stuff on https://www.cox.com/residential/support/cox-panoramic-wifi-app-advanced-security-service.html)? 2) Allow Access functionality - a) Can it be extended past 1 hr? If I were to able keep the security service on and allow access for a given IP for 1 business day (or even longer, really) it would be much more useful. b) Can you get faster access to notifications than is provided via the wifi.cox.com page? It seems hit or miss on how responsive it is. I haven't tried the mobile app yet; I try to keep as little on my phone as possible. 3) Bonus Question! I've noticed I can ssh into the machine even with the security service enabled for about 30sec before the pipe breaks. Any guesses? Not super important, but curious. Thanks in advance for any assistance!2.9KViews0likes3CommentsHow to use Shareplay with this unfortunate ISP
I'm truly at my wits and either COX, I cannot Express my disdain for this company in words. I have not been able to use Shareplay on my PS4 since being graced with this ISP. I have called and talked to multiple COX reps about my issue and none can help me so naturally into to my networking friend and Google for help, and when I say I've tried everything we could come up with, we've tried everything, port forwarding/triggering(got port numbers from sony), DMZ, swapped routers (tried 2 Cox issued modems and then purchased my own modem/router combo by netgear, I can provide model numbers when I get home if it helps) i tried a static IP but i don't think I ever got it to work correctly and I tried bridging my modem to my linksys router and they just successfully exploded the net and I had to set everything to factor and start again, I'm hardwired with CAT6 eilthernet cables, now with my personal modem I AM clocking constantly higher speeds than the issued modem but i still cannot use shareplay, its beyond frustrating, I have PS plus and both my friend and I have speeds WAY over the required. I tried to ask for help on Cox Twitter and they were worst than the phone representatives believe it or not. I did see a post up here of someone having a similar issue 10-11months ago and they resolved it by getting their own modem, I'm curious if it worked for them because it wasn't a modem/router combo or if it was before Cox started blocking ports I assume its cause port 80 is blocked which would explain why my port forwarding and DMZ didn't work, if Cox isn't sending the signal at all, opening the ports wouldn't do anything anyway but Cox will not tell me for sure if that is the reason or not I have no clue I'm just making a guess based off the googling I did. Does anyone know why it's not working? And maybe if I'm lucky a solution?? Or am I just screwed to never be able to host a shareplay in the state of NV since they are the only ISP here with speeds fast enough to even game on in the first place x.x (which ** cause I'd really love to never use Cox again) I can join shareplay's my friends host but can never host one x.x I'm going to pull my hair out with this. Can they really block a whole feature from everyone?!9.4KViews0likes0CommentsElder Scrolls Online Problem
My girlfriend plays Elder Scrolls Online and every time there is an update we have to pull our hair out for days on end trying to get the game to update. This last time nothing at all worked and after contacting Bethesda Software about the issue it turns out that Cox Cable is blocking the port which the game uses to update itself. Presumably it is TCP port 80. And we know it is your fault because Bethesda has already attempted to make contact with you about it. We tried everyhing from setting up the modem to do all the port forwarding to reinstalling everything, all to no avail. I want to know when you are going to fix this problem and stop blocking internet users. I'm already mad that you increased our rates for December without even bothering to let me know which I will be reporting to the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission for charging me the price for the tier above mine which I gave no consent to. And now with my girlfriend already having lost 3 days of paid time in the game, I am expecting to be compensated for both the overcharge and inability to use what we paid for. Which is non-negotiable and you cannot reject.8.1KViews1like10CommentsDynamic port blocking - what the heck?
I'm having a peculiar issue with inbound TCP connections (to my local smart home services and Plex server). Basically, after a period of successful operation, I can no longer receive inbound connections on a given TCP port (it shows as connection refused), and have to change the port mapping to be able to access it again; then, after another period, the new port becomes closed/connection refused, and I have to change it again - although usually the old one works again by this time. It's definitely upstream of me (I have tested with a laptop on the outside of my router), so any thoughts on what's exactly going on, and how it can be stopped? -cSolved1.5KViews0likes2Comments
