IPv6 Routing using Arris TG2472 modem (Cox Wireless modem) & Juniper SRX firewall
Hi All, I was about to ask if anyone had this working, but figured it out and thought I'd share as this would be gold information for a few with the need. I have a Juniper SRX240 setup behind the Arris TG2472 modem. The modem can do IPv6 and will pull an address using SLAAC. Any, the Arris modem is using a link-local as the gateway. It says the link-local is FE80::226:99FF:FE89:EBD9. On my juniper, I entered the command, 'set routing-options rib inet6.0 static route 0::/0 qualified-next-hop fe80::226:99ff:fe89:ebd9 interface ge-0/0/0.0'. This is the command required to enter a link-local as a next-hop (more or less gateway) for the firewall. I tried to ping google v6 dns (2001:4860:4860::8888) and it didn’t work. I had a client plugged into the Arris modem as well as it was successful, so I checked the IPv6 neighbors on the windows client and didn’t see fe80::226:99ff:fe89:ebd9, but I did see fe80::3e7a:8aff:fefb:3609 (check output below) and more specifically, it is also a router. I changed the Juniper cmd to 'set routing-options rib inet6.0 static route 0::/0 qualified-next-hop fe80::3e7a:8aff:fefb:3609 interface ge-0/0/0.0' and viola….IPv6 Magic! So, I don’t even see the link-local that the Arris modem says it sees, but whatever…likely a bug. This is now working. BTW, you get a /60, so I am testing using routed /64’s behind each other to see if that works. It should, but you never can tell with cheaper gear. Happy routing! My connection drops just enough for me to lose my connection to online games. I just recently upgraded my modem to take advantage of the new Ultimate speeds (300/30). I am currently using an Arris TG2472. I had zero issues with disconnects until switching to this modem. I have it wired (Cat6) directly into my PC's onboard NIC (Killer E2200 on my MSi Gaming 5 motherboard). Sometimes I can go hours without disconnecting, other times it happens multiple times a minute. I've reset the modem many times. I'm unable to determine if my other devices lose connection due to the duration of disconnect being so brief and I'm not always watching them like my main PC. Attached are my modem logs (surprised the tables stayed intact ). Any ideas? Couldn't find a straight answer so I decided to post it here. I'm aware that in order to be given a 200Mbps or 300Mbps modem code a minimum of 16 channels is required. At the present time however there is no 16 X 4 solution with an eMTA adapter that is only a modem. (There is currently a gateway modem/dual band wifi router with eMTA that is 24 X 8 which is the Arris TG2472) However a little over 2 months ago I spent over $250.00 on an AC3200 router/dual band wifi gateway. So renting the Arris TG2472 makes no sense monetarily. There is a Cisco DPC3216 modem with eMTA that is a 16 X 4 product without the gateway. Now call me loony, but when there isn't a direct upgrade path for me to maintain the mechanics of my chosen method of receiving Cox's Ultimate package is ticking me off. Would I be willing to pay slightly more for a 33 percent upgrade in speed, more than likely. Do I have any other option? Hope so :)2.4KViews0likes3Comments
