I am frustrated that my neighbors had put a 4 way splitter on my outside Cox connection. Has anyone else had this probem?
Someone at cox.help@cox.com might be able to help if you email them your account info and request. If nothing else they "may" be able to confirm the unit number who was wired up that way. It all depends if the tech. left notes on the account. They usually don't.
How would this work to tap onto a neighbor's Internet service? They must have cloned the MAC address of OP's modem. Wouldn't Cox detect 2 modems on the account?
The user in question may have been using it that way for TV back before Cox encrypted all their channels. Or Cox might have added the line to support additional customers without adding additional infrastructure. It all depends on the hardware the tech. found and how it was wired.
If the neighbor was stealing cable-TV, this splitter must have been installed for at least 5 years. If it's an HOA, these units are pretty much cookie-cutter. I don't think a contractor would forget to wire a unit and then shunt through an adjoining wall to share a NID. If Cox shared the NID, there'd be an exposed cable routed to the next unit. I'm just curious if the splitter was even connected to the next unit.
I think somebody needed to replace a splitter without going to the store.
