Introducing Cox WiFi

What is Cox WiFi?

With Cox, our customers’ High Speed Internet goes where they go. All Preferred, Premier, or Ultimate Cox High Speed Internet subscribers have access for free to over 150,000 hotspots when they travel to cities like Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.   Additionally, customers in markets where we have Cox WiFi hotspots, including Northern Virginia and Connecticut get WiFi access around town and in places that are convenient to them. 

How do I use Cox WiFi? Where are hotspots?

Just look for the “CableWiFi” or “CoxWiFi” network on your WiFi-enabled devices, enter your Cox username and password, and begin enjoying FREE WiFi service. Want to find your nearest WiFi hotspot? Search on our interactive map at Cox.com/hotspots.

Update! - 11/22/13

Good news, we have recently completed our integration with Time Warner as part of the Cable WiFi partnership. Cox customers can now access hotspots in their networks like Los Angeles, New York, Kansas City, Austin, Charlotte, and more! Find these newest hotspots at cox.com/hotspots.

More good news, we have recently completed our integration with Brighthouse Networks as part of the Cable WiFi partnership. Cox customers can now access hotspots in their networks like Tampa, Orlando, Daytona, Birmingham, and more! Find these newest hotspots at cox.com/hotspots.

    Nothing in RI yet? Thats odd, usually we get stuff before CT. Some questions;

    1. What are the technical details of the network? What kind of AP? Band? 

    2. What ports are blocked? What services are allowed?

    3. As far as email goes, is CableWiFi or CoxWifi considered on network or off network?

    1.  That's not something we'll publicly discuss.
    2.  I'll have to look into that, although this may vary among providers.
    3.  You can mitigate this issue by using secure SMTP.

    1. Really? Cox won't discuss the technical details of a publicly available network? Why not? What was the point of bringing it up here then?

    3. I asked the question for other reasons too; ESPN Online content, Advanced TV, etc. Also, does it count against our bandwidth caps?

    It shouldn't count against your allowance as how that is counted at the modem.

    Chris,

    To be honest I don't think it's right for Cox to be able to install thousands of AP into the public space and not have to document their configuration. Not security of course, but just basic wireless settings. Also, why post a thread on Wifi networks on a technical forum if you don't wish to talk about it technically? Im confused. Are you just busy and don't have the time to look up the documentation?

    Hello Trikein,

    Here is some more information.  The Cox WiFi network is a commercial grade network suitable for public outdoor access.  Cox WiFi allows download and upload throughput speeds of up to 15x4 Mbps, although speeds can vary depending on traffic volume.

    Regarding the ports and services, Cox WiFi is intended to provide an experience similar to what you would receive at home.  We have FAQ's as well as Terms of Service and Acceptable Use policy information here: www.cox.com/wifi

    In terms of email, the connection should work in the same way as it would from home.  

    It's true that this isn't available in Rhode Island yet, however we are working on expanding to more locations.

    Thanks! The only reason Im looking to know is this actually came up in a previous thread and I looked like a dumb dumb because I had no idea it was even a thing. The women was having a hard time seeing the network so I was looking to see what band the Wifi is in. Only thing I can find is 

    "What type of devices can I connect to Cox WiFi?

    With Cox WiFi, you can connect all devices that are Wi-Fi enabled. This includes laptops, tablets and smartphones."

    I assume this means B/G/N with no security and a splash screen for user/password. Oh well, probably won't be too many posts on it.

    Hello Trikein

    Yes, it supports 802.11 B/G/N. User authentication is handled via Radius/AAA with password encryption. After latching on to the Cox WiFi SSID, users are presented with a splash screen and forced to authenticate with proper credentials or can request a free 1 hour trial of WiFi. With a free trial, we provide them with a voucher number that gets redeemed via AAA authentication. We also use device MAC caching to track a session.
