Very slow upload speeds, download speeds are fine

Hello,

The past couple months, I have been having very slow upload speeds (anywhere between 100 Kbps to 2 Mbps) that are intermittent. There doesn't seem to be any specific time that these occur. When this is happening, my download speed stays high. I am currently paying for 100 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload.

I have had two contractors out to my apartment in the past week. The first one informed me that the signal my unit is receiving is actually really strong. The second one took out the splitter that my unit was going into to see if that would eliminate the problem, but it has not. Unfortunately, since the problems only occurs somewhat randomly, it was not occurring when they were at my place.

On my end, I have tried multiple modems, multiple coax cables from the wall to my modem, and multiple ethernet cables from the modem to my computer (I am usually directly connected to my modem). I have hooked up my wireless router to verify that I was also receiving poor upload speeds on my wireless network, just to ensure that it wasn't my computer's network card causing issues. After doing all these things and still seeing the issue, I do not believe it is on my end.

My modem is an Arris SB6183. Here are the statistics for downstream/upstream:

I am noticing many critical events in the modem logs, but am unsure what they really mean. I can post them if necessary.

I just installed PingPlotter and was doing a quick test, I noticed that I'm dropping about ~25% of my packets when the upload speed problem is ongoing.

Can I please get some assistance with this? I don't really want to continue having contractors coming out to my place as nothing is really changing. I have gone back and forth with the Twitter support, who have also noticed some issues. Please let me know if you require any more information.

The connection is actually provisioned faster than the speeds you've mentioned. With that in mind it appears the router may be the weak point as how to link between it and the modem appears to be slower than the subscribed speeds. Can you try connecting a PC with a gigabit Ethernet directly to the modem and testing?

I understand that my router doesn't support these speeds, but like I said I'm normally connected directly to my modem and have noticed these poor uploads speeds while directly connected. My network card is a Realtek 8111F, which supports up to 1000 Mbps, so I should be good there.

The PC having gigabit Ethernet will have no impact on the connection so long as the weaker link remains in the chain. I'd suggest testing this PC connected without the router and see if there is any improvement for starters. All of your recent speed tests show speeds better than what you're provisioned for and based on what I'm seeing from here I suspect they were done without the router in place.

I just took the router out of the situation by directly connecting to the modem and I'm already seeing the same issue with slow upload speeds.

Since changing whatever you did I'm now only seeing a 10Mbps link between the modem and router. It's possible you have an Ethernet cable failure or something going on with the port on either end. If you can try connecting the PC again let me know and I'll check the status again.

You have post FEC (forward error corrections) on the ISM band (909-927 MHz). Usually the result of older cordless phones from the 90s, nextel, and other devices that use that band ingressing into your line. Thats causing you packet loss and thus slower download speeds. Hate to tell you this, but you need another tech over to troubleshoot where those errors are coming from (inside wiring, line going into apt, or coming from the outside plant)

Thank you for the info. I have another tech coming out on Thursday, this time it will be a Cox employee. I will note though that my download speeds have been fine (usually between 70-100 Mbps); it's my upload speeds that have been extremely poor at times. Would this issue be affecting my upload speeds as well?

I have been having the same problem. I upgraded service and gear and i still have the same slow upload speeds.

What equipment are you using and what speeds are you subscribed to? What speeds are your receiving wired vs WiFi?
