Declined Credit Card $25 Fee

I was recently assessed a $25 autopay fee for a declined credit card. How does COX justify this fee? No other company I have ever done business with has charged a fee for a declined credit card. This is most definitely illegal, fine print or not, this is beyond outrageous.

malv83, I presume? As you've already been told over on DSLR, "you need to contact the Consumer Protection office for your state. They can tell you if the fees are legal, and what to do if they are not."

Or start your own class-action lawsuit against Cox and see where that gets you. Happy hunting!

  • Our Billing and Payment policies are printed on each monthly statement, on the Annual Notice to Customers, and on the Cox.com website.

If your check bank draft or electronic funds transfer is returned for insufficient funds, and we bill you for our services, we will charge you up to $25. If the state law where you receive our services requires a different fee, we will charge you that amount. When payment is made by credit card, the payment will also be subject to the terms and conditions required by the credit card issuer. For more details on billing and payment policies visit

  • Cox is setting itself up for failure by entering the credit card charge on the bill due date. There is no option to have it posted on a date prior to the due date to allow time for any problem to be resolved to avoid the late fee. I do pay my cox bill using a credit card on the due date. On one occasion the credit card charge was never received by the bank and, of course, a $25 late fee was charged. Further investigation revealed that neither Cox nor the bank were at fault as the internet just ate the transaction. Had to get the late fee reversed by calling - what a PITA! If I could set it to run 4-5 days prior to due date that would have all been avoided. FWIW, I can do this with other vendors that I pay by credit card so it is not a new idea.
