No reason to upgrade as long as the old modem works well now.

They will require an upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1 for 500 Mbit plans and higher. There's no scam. Even though the manufacturer gives a huge speed number for that older modem, you never want to run a modem at more than 50% of its rated speed for various reasons. That's why they require the faster modem for a 500 Mbit plan. It's worth the upgrade anyway just to get the OFDM channel.
