why is it that i need a docsis 3.1

why is it that i need a modem that supports 1G speed plus for an upgrade to 500mps? i have a netgear cm600 docsis 3.0 witch supports up to 960mps and i was told i needed to upgrade to the to the docsis 3.1. it makes no sense to me can anyone help?

    No reason to upgrade as long as the old modem works well now.

      They will require an upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1 for 500 Mbit plans and higher. There's no scam. Even though the manufacturer gives a huge speed number for that older modem, you never want to run a modem at more than 50% of its rated speed for various reasons. That's why they require the faster modem for a 500 Mbit plan. It's worth the upgrade anyway just to get the OFDM channel.
