I hate to purchase my own equipment to especially it gets outdated then I’m stuck. I might just look into an extender.

Modem. Compared to its earlier versions, DOCSIS 3.1 will have a longer shelf life. The only things to outdate D3.1 are D4, full-duplex communications and Cox upgrading their line cards, nodes, amplifiers, cables, etc. This won't happen anytime soon and Cox is far from subscribers fully exploiting D3.1 because this technology is capable of a lot more bandwidth. For example, if your neighborhood is too congested, Cox will knock the 35 Mbps upload of your giga-plan down to 10. This is insane. A new modem would probably die of old age before it becomes outdated.
Router. It's just a radio broadcasting on crowded frequencies, and the Pano has more limitations than any popular brand on the market. Yes, if it doesn't work, Cox will freely replace it but would another Pano reach the extra 15-20 feet? If it does, there must but some serious production discrepancies with this unit. Moreover, if it does, what will be its next discrepancy...out-of-spec signals, "too many accounts," it's too loud? You basically want a radio with a strong transmitter and proven security features. MIMO, WiFi 6, 6 GHz would be nice but your wireless devices would also need to support these updates.
As superbigwaff noted, renting at $11 a month adds up over time. You could buy a brand-new router every 3 years at this rate.
