Change Panoramic wi fi name

Just upgrades to Panoramic wifi with new modem. Tech also upgraded all 5 of my set top boxes - no more cables - YAY - but, I have existing Netgear NightHawk mesh wifi with many devices on it. I'd like to move the new modem to that network and off of the Cox supplied network. I am also planning to upgrade mesh system to TP-Link Deco tri-band wifi.  I have installed Cox apps on cell phone and android tablet. Don't see any advanced system admin tools at all. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Tom Shanks

  • OK, I see. You want to change the SSID on the gateway to the one that was on your mesh system so your devices connect to it instead of your mesh. You can do that if you want, either via the app or signing into the gateway via 192.168.0.1, but like you said, then you need to use the Panoramic app to control and configure your network, not the Netgear app.

There are two problems, one is technical and one is more red tape. The technical part is I think the boxes require something special about the connection between the boxes, the gateway, and Cox. Some say it has to do with the MoCA ability of the gateway, but MoCA is coax, so the wifi connection between the box and gateway shouldn't have anything to do with MoCa. However for some strange reason, the gateway will only allow MoCA if you have wireless boxes so there must be some connection. I know some people have gotten around the issue by using ethernet to connect their retail router to the boxes. This makes me think the issue is something to do with the wifi connection. Not sure if the gateway puts out some hidden SSID that the boxes need to connect or something else. The second problem is the gateway needs to be on the account so the account is assigned specific codes and provisioned a certian way on the account for the service to work. Another words even if you could get it to work technically with your mesh system, you would still need to keep and pay for the gateway on your account. This is really only a issue though if you pay monthly for the gateway.

Another option would be to not use Cox TV service and switch to some kind of streaming service like YTTV. If you are data only, you can use your own modem, which would not only solve the problem, but save you money too.

So I guess Cox is deleting any new post I make. Testing if this gets posted

After re-reading your post, I am kind of confused on what you are trying to do. What do you mean by " I'd like to move the new modem to that network and off of the Cox supplied network."? Move the new modem? What do you mean move it? Also, what do you mean "off the Cox supplied network"? I still think my below statement gets to the root of your question, but since I don't fully understand the question, I could be wrong.

I have an existing WiFi network with several devices on from cell phones to Echo Show and Dot devices, thermostat, and numerous other IOT things (including washer and dryer) that I want to keep on the existing network. I thought that assigning the new Cox modem to that network instead of using the Cox supplied WiFi network name. After doing a lot of digging, it looks like that can't be done. Had I known that in advance, I never would have let Cox "upgrade" everything. I can't administer the Cox WiFi with the detail I can with my network. Cox has seen fit to not allow the end user, who by the way, pays an exorbitant monthly fee, to have control over the network. So far, I've found nothing to compare with Netgear's Genie app. I'll keep plugging at this and if I find a viable solution, I'll post it. BTW - I'm a retired System Analyst/Solution Architect/SQL Analyst, ex-college adjunct with over 40 years experience so I'm not a novice, just an old man who "wants it his way".

  • I see a title of change names but no discussion about names. I moved to an apartment and was given a user name and password. Can I now rename both of those for privacy?

Names referred to in original message are network WiFi names. Cox assigned a name and password to my new Panoramic WiFi that wanted to change. However, research and assistance from knowledgeable folks here have said that, yes, I can change the name BUT my Contour streaming boxes will lose access and I'll lose my TV stations. So, long story short, you should be able to change your USER name and password but I'd get clarification first to make sure something in the Cox ecosystem won't croak.

Just so you know, the issue in your case isn't a problem with changing the name and password of the Wi-Fi network. It's what device is using that Wi-Fi name and password. if you have wireless boxes, you need to use the panoramic gateway.

Yes, you can. You can use the panoramic app. I don't think that will help with your problem though since you said your drivers are disappearing on your computer which is a computer problem, not a Cox problem. Good luck though.

OK, not sure why both my posts were deleted. Not sure if it's a glitch or if moderators now are just deleting mt posts because they don't like me here.

Yes, you can change the name or password. You can either use the app or sign into the gateway via 192.168.0.1, Either way won't help you though since you said you are having driver issues with your computer, which is a computer issue, not a Cox/wifi issue.
