WJHG-HD channel outages

I live in Niceville and wonder if anyone else (or Cox tech support) can tell me what might be going on. On and off for literally 15 years I have sporadic outages for WJHG Panama City. Before the signal became all-digital I attributed it to line-loss, and once Cox found a bad repeater amplifier between the road and my house. Now that the signal is HD and digital that can't be the explanation. My HD service is on channel 1007 (and the non-HD is just 7). This usually is at the worst in the evening, particularly around the time the 10 PM news comes on. But it randomly happens at other times as well. Right now (5:49 PM on Saturday the 25th) I have WJHG service on the non-HD station (7) on both my HDTV and an older TV in the kitchen, but no service on the WJHD-HD channel (1007).

Hi ChiefCWO,

If the signal getting to the cable receiver isn't as strong as it needs to be, lots of weird things can happen. Is WJHG-HD (channel 1007) the only channel to ever display the "Temporarily Off Air" message? Do you ever turn to a channel and only get a black screen, or have audio or tiling problems?

If you haven't already done so, make sure all your connections to the cable box and TV are finger-tight. Are there any splitters on the coax connection to your TV? It's possible that the splitter has come to the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced.

We may need to schedule a service call so a technician can ensure proper signal levels. In the past few months, how often do you have problems with WJHG?

Becky. Some clarification. When I loose the channel I never get the "Temporary Off Air". All I get is a blank, back screen. I should have said that the conditions yesterday, having a signal on channel 7, but nothing on 1007, isn't the norm. Usually when this happens both channels are affected. I get the black screen on 1007, but typically the "low-def" channel 7 picture is either frozen and smeared, pixelating, or blank as well. And yes, this only happens with the WJHG stations. I usually just bump up one station (to 1008, WPMI) the other NBC affiliate. I can go to virtually any other channel in my service and I have no problem. It is WJHG, and only WJHG. And it is so probabilistic it has been impossible to have it happen while a Cox service person is here (believe me, I've tried). The only time anything remotely useful happened is when the tech found the bad amp in the street service. Maybe it has gone bad again? No splitters, no inline amps, signal comes from the wall to the Cox cable box to the TV. The connections are all tight. And like I said, it has happened frequently this week. I just checked (1215 PM on the 26) and 1007 is black, & 7 is fine.

One other bit of info. I have a second HDTV in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Same deal. I can get 7 but not 1007

Ok, the saga continues. I'm sitting here at 10:12PM on Monday the 27th. I haven't touched or changed a thing. Now the WJHG-HD station (1007) is coming in, but it occasionally freezes. The non-HD channel 7 is pixelating about the same time the HD channel freezes. I'll send this to the service folks via email, and reference this thread, but the problem is so intermittent I don't have a lot of faith.
