Whole Home DVR

One of my Whole home DVR 'Host' units went bad after 3 months and many many  hours are toast.  Why isn't there some ability either by COX or individual that you can backup the contents of the DVR.  There is a USB port built into the unit!  Seems to me that would be a basic requirement in todays world of media needs.  I know that many people have experienced data loss at one point and are aware of the situation.....why hasn't COX or other cable providers stepping up to the plate?
