Upload speed issues

Hi,

I have been through all the trouble steps, and had a tech come over yesterday, but I still am having intermittent upload issues. Either upload fails completely (times out/package loss issue) or I have very low < 1 Mbit upload speeds. At times, it manages to reach 15 Mbit for short durations before going back down to being out/unreliable.

I have done all the internal trouble shooting steps:

- remove router
- direct connection to router
- different pc's
- swapped out the modem
- replaced/switch every wire internally
- Tech visit after he rewired the cables distributing the service into the house

Current modem levels look close to perfect:
Downstream: 7.5 downstream - 40 ish noise
Upstream: 46.2 upstream

Trouble shooting calls with the Tier1-Tier2 support really didn't give any information, apart from "high packet loss" according to tier2. I have run speed tests using the cox tool so it can be referenced.

I have a tech coming over at 1 today to verify the connection going TO the house itself, but after reading the issues with network upgrades I was wondering if this is a completely different issue all together. It started happening this past Tuesday night the 26th and has been going on since then.

Anyone have any ideas?

Looks like you have done most/all the troubleshooting already, but some questions;

1. What model modem do you have?

2. To find packet loss its good to ping your gateway. To find that;

     Windows + R > CMD > Tracert Cox.net

      What is the IP at the hop after your router. I will call that x.x.x.x
      Ping -n 50 x.x.x.x

Right click top of window > Edit > Select All > Enter

Should give you result like

Ping statistics for x.x.x.x :
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 6ms, Maximum = 15ms, Average = 7ms

Currently connected modem is the Cisco DPC3010. Before that I had a Cisco DPQ3212 connected but swapped them to make sure it was not a modem issue. The issue persists so I ruled that out.

I currently am getting about 0.51 Mbit upload and this is the test I ran. My download is fine (20-40 depending on the test)

Ping statistics for 10.16.208.1:

Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 48, Lost = 2 (4% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 6ms, Maximum = 22ms, Average = 8ms

Looks congestion of some kind. The question is where.

Can you post the full tracert?

Full Tracert - note, speed tests are fine at this moment. 40 down/15 up. This is baffling me. As I said the issue is intermittent.

Tracing route to Cox.net [68.99.123.161] over a maximum of 30 hops:

That looks like latency you would get from bad signal. Could you post your entire signal readings?

::Ping:: Could a Moderator take a look at the area and see if anything is going on?

Full signal readings: (please note, for some miracle reason I am getting 40down/20up currently. But as past results have shown this will not last very long :(

Update, my upload just now dropped back down again, now at 4Mbit (down from 20).

Try to catch your signal when your upload or speed changes. See if maybe your upstream power level is changing.

Its fluctuating now between 15 Mbit upload and 1-2 Mbit upload, however the upstream power levels aren't changing at all.

Hi TiddanyR,

Thank you very much for the update. I just received a call that my service tech is going to be here in 15 minutes or less. I will let him know that the levels are out of spec and that I am having 8% packet loss. I will update this post with the findings.

After the tech arrived he determined that the amp outside my house that is leading the signal to my house was pumping out too much signal (too high/hot). I now have to wait for yet another tech to come out, and since it's Saturday this most likely won't be till next week Monday or Tuesday.

At least I am glad that the issue was identified, however it's quite disappointing to see that it can't be resolved in a timely manner. I am still very happy with the level of friendliness of the technicians and support reps however, since time tables are out of their hands.

iminay,

Oh good! I'm glad we've tracked down the problem. Sometimes it takes more than one visit to get to the bottom of things, especially if there's more than one cause. I see there's a ticket that was entered today for maintenance on our lines. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, our maintenance teams are usually pretty quick to get these types of things resolved fairly quickly.
