Ultimate package, high ping

Right now I am paying for the ultimate package, as it says in the subject, and have high ping. Speed tests and ping tests online show I have 21ms, but that is different in games. My ping varies from 64 in some games, and 100-120 in others. I know to some that isn't to bad. But, when I lived in NC I payed for 50mbps from TWC and never came over 50ms. Maybe I missed something, I've been looking all over the place. I know internet connects have hiccups, but I'm getting more mbs and higher ping. The connection speed for the browsing and other things is fine. But when my  wife or I try to play a game, it lags.

Everything is looking good from us to the modem.  Perhaps you could collect some trace route data to the hosts in question and we can see where latency starts.

The second trace is not really showing anything of concern for it is displaying and where its traveling from. The 1st does show some latency but nothing major. Being both Ips do not display any information for what you are testing to what game or games are you seeing the issues with?

League of Legends and Smite are the only ones I think. The only other game I play at the moment is DayZ and that seems to be fine.

I know you can't just blame the ISP for these things because there are a ton of things that can happen. I'm just looking to see if you guys have any suggestions.

When you are talking about less then 50 ms changes when moving to other states it is not that big of a jump depending on the distance so that will factor in when  you are talking sub 100 ms ping times for a game location of the server for load and routing will factor. As well as speed that your home connection responds. Typically you are talking 100 ms from one side of the US to the other is normal. Half way you will see a jump but not to that extent. Unless there was actually packet loss somewhere or a constant spike at a hop there is little that be directly done if were talking those sub 100~150 numbers. If those are Ips for specific servers I would see if you try other servers on that game if it improves at all.

Those are the only servers for NA. I might need to switch ISP's because $100 a month to lag and have that kind of ping isn't acceptable to me. Thanks for your help though.

I'm going to do some more searching and tweak everything I can before I actually make a decision. Thanks again.

Nothing in the trace routes looks too alarming.  I wouldn't rule out either game performance issues or perhaps checking with the host for possible server performance issues.

Sorry if I came off a bit rude on the last 2 posts.

What about the modem. Could it just be I need to buy a better one?

When I look at the data posted so far I'm actually not seeing any evident problems with the connection between you and the hosts in questions.  Part of my suggestion in my last post was maybe this isn't an Internet problem but more of a performance issue either on your end or theirs.  Can't say that for sure but it's something to consider.

I agree. Could you go into more detail on the actual symtoms? Sometimes FPS issues can feel like lag problems when your playing. Also, depending on the game and multiplayer style, the game's servers themselves can be having problems. Many times the game's forums is a good place to start if it's that.

Pings are always the isp rofl.  My ping to west/central servers from hundreds of hosts is at 100ms lulz.  Just formatted pc, I live in a brand new condo, tech said all the connections are really good, I'm in San Diego.  Questioning my *** router/modem combo that you guys gave me.  Would prefer if you guys gave me a separate device for each, more stability... Connection drops all the time during peak hours.  More nodes anyone?

No, they aren't. The ISP, by it's very definition is the Internet Service Provider, so they just provide the internet. Many other companies actually run and handle most of the internet's traffic. Many times the problem can be tracked to the ISP that game uses, or even a congestion issue on the peering node between that ISP and a major backbone provider like Level3.

Then why not bring it back and buy the equipment you want? What equipment you use is completely optional, and I agree seperate units are better for performance and troubleshooting reasons.

Also, im not sure how your post is helpful to the OP. If your having issues, feel free to start a new thread.
