Rovi Update from Cisco

On October 21, 2014, Cisco pushed out a rovi update for their DVRs including the Explorer 8642HDC. Mine loss its signal that day and after an hour or more with Cox Support via the phone it was determined a service call was necessary to correct the problem. The tech came out on October 23, 2014, and restored the proper signal strength. However, the DVR would still not connect properly. He talked to someone at the service center he is out of in Norman, Oklahoma, who told him there was a compatibility problem between the rovi update and Cox's software for the DVR. He also indicated a fix was being worked on. Does Cox have an idea when the fix might be good to go? My DVR shows what appears to be and error code of 66, runs the cycle of attempting to load the update, shows "Proc", then "Boot", and then sits a few minutes and starts over. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Rovi software is "Passport." The Cisco 8642HDC runs on Contour. If Rovi is indeed pushing a Contour update, it's news to me.

What Contour rev level does your diagnostics indicate? 3.6.0.401 ?? That is the latest. What Axiom rev level? 3.6.2.2  ?? Also the latest.

There were some problems with the latest Rovi "Passport" update on the 8240HDC DVR, but the 8642HDC runs on Contour, not Rovi Passport.

Hey Cox...is Rovi involved with Contour?

I'm not personally aware of any outstanding Rovi issues going on at the present.  If the technician was able to fix the signal levels and you are still having problems the box should have probably have been swapped out.  If it's more convenient at this point we can take care of that for you if you want to bring it to one of our solutions stores.

Hi Domino,

I don't have Contour and I really don't want the service either. My house has one TV and it is connected to the DVR. The Rovi update is what the technician told me the problem was.

Christi,

If I swap out the DVR, I am going to lose the many programs I have recorded to it. I am willing to swap out the DVR but want a way to save the programs on it, if possible. Also, I know Cox has HDDs that can connect to the DVRs but I already have several of my own. Would it be possible to connect a 1 TB drive with an USB 2.0 and a Firewire 800 port to the DVR and backup or download the programs saved on it to that drive? Would it also be possible to use that drive as a backup to the replacement DVR? Finally, Domino's reply referenced Contour. I understand Contour was a service - with an additional cost - that the customer had to sign up for. Contour would not benefit my household. My wife and I have certain programs we watch along with sports and what we can't watch, we DVR. Also, we have only one TV connected to the DVR. We have tablets (iPad and iPad mini), computers, and smartphones but don't use them for TV or DVR'ed program viewing. That is done on the TV in the family room. Any additional help you can provide would be appreciated as the current DVR has yet to reset itself to usability. Thank you!

If you connect an external drive, the DVR will format the drive. As long as you don't connect it to any other device, it will keep the programs, even if you swap DVRs. You can connect any size drive but remember the DVR will save to the drive with the most space. Once the remaining storage is the same as the DVR, it will start to record there.

Thank you for that clarification. However, will I be able to save programs I already have on the non-functioning onto the hard drive so I don't lose what is there if I have to swap out the DVRs?

The shows already on the DVR cannot be removed.

If you have an 8642HDC DVR, then you have Contour. Contour is just the IPG that powers the DVR. Push the "GUIDE" button on your remote. When the program guide is on the screen, what does it say in the bottom left corner? My 8642HDC runs Contour on only a single TV. Contour does NOT mean whole home DVR.

Can't see the guide because the DVR won't load and properly reset.

Great! Not what I wanted to hear; thank you. Is there no way to recover them since it looks like I will have to exchange the box?

The Cisco 8642HDC is also used by Cox running the Rovi IPG. (In Cisco markets only)  Those have a Red "R" sticker on the back.  These are used in a non-Contour install, the SA 8240HDCs are EOL, and slowly being retired.

Bolded above, is incorrect information.  The External HDD's recordings are paired to a single DVR, swapping DVRs would result in the new DVR reformatting the Ext. HDD before it could be used, again.

I stand corrected. I apologize. Here's the correct information.

When a customer connects an eSATA drive it will format, deleting any information stored on the eSATA drive. If the eSATA device is moved and connected to different DVR or device, all content stored on the eSATA drive is deleted and cannot be recovered. However, the eSATA drive may be reconnected to the same DVR without any loss of data.

Passport was used in the 8642 for a brief time in limited markets. That practice stopped well over a year ago, IIRC.

In some markets, the 8240HDC is the only 2-tuner DVR being offered. Cox is only offering the 9865HDC as the only Contour DVR in many markets. I'm happy with my 8642HDC/Single TV/Contour setup.
