pausing live tv on aux boxes

I am from OC in California. I have the whole home DVR. Every time i try to pause a live show (like yesterday's superbowl) it will take a few seconds, then pause it. I leave room and 30 secs later hear the tv again and have to go hit pause again, which seems to work. Then I go complete what I was doing, say 5-10 minutes, come back, push play and it runs for 3 seconds then sits there. I missed half the first quarter because of this yesterday, since the only way to fix it seems to be to change channels and back to live game.
