Mini box HBO reception

My COX package includes the HBO channel, but I cannot view HBO on the TV sets connected to COX via mini boxes. What gives?

I thinks its because mini boxes are designed to replace CATV, not to replace actual digital receivers. Also, mini boxes don't have upstream capability, so they don't know what premium channels you sign up for, and which ones you don't.

Hi Lenvie,

A Cox cable receiver is required to view HBO and other premium channels. Was HBO available on this TV in the past, perhaps while connected to a cable receiver? You only need a mini box if the TV connects directly to the wall outlet and does not already have a Cox cable receiver or CableCARD device.

The mini-box only receives Starter and Essential tier programming, not premium channels.

I said part of the issue is the mini boxes have no upstream, but that got me thinking, how does it know what channel package you have (Starter vs Essential) if it can't communicate with Cox's database to check. Another words, if it can decrypt Starter package, why not premiums?
