Internet constantly dropping

I am constantly being disconnect from the internet all day long.  I work out of my house and require internet service and this happens at all hours of the day.  I have had this problem for a while and cox says it's my modem.  The service technician said it was the modem dropping the service.  Well I have a new modem and guess what????  It's is still dropping.  I know this is an internal problem with cox from reading all the same problems with other customers.  I would love to hear a solution to my problem because so far I haven't heard any.  I don't want to switch to AT&T, but this is looking like a bad situation Cox is providing to it's customers.

I think sometimes Cox Technicians blame the modem when no other obvious problems found. Not exactly how I troubleshoot, but some like to use the shotgun approach. So the question is, if not the modem, what IS the problem. I would first like to know some details of the problem. When you say "disconnect" could you describe what happens exactly? Do the lights on the modem change? Is it both wired and wireless connections? Do you get some kind of error message?

Also, what are the signal levels going to your modem? Generally, to find out, open up a browser and type 192.168.100.1 into the address bar and hit enter. A screen for your modem should come up. Usually, there should be some different options along the top or side of the page. Look for one labels "Signal" and then just copy and paste what you find there. For more specific instructions, I would need to know what kind of modem you have.

What happens is the all the lights on the modem go out and slowly the modem reconnects one light at a time.  It knocks out my wireless and wired internet.   I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5101U.  Below is the signal levels you were looking for...

Downstream Value
Frequency 801000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 38.7 dB
Power Level 16.6 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 1
Frequency 37600000 Hz
Power 30.2 dBmV

Thanks for taking the time to help!

This is what Cox Technician replied to me...

Thanks for emailing.  I took a look at the connection from this end and it appears the signal levels being reported are out of specification which is likely contributing to the troubles you’re seeing.  This situation is unique in that the signals are out of specification in such a way that they are too strong as opposed to too weak.  We’ll likely need to schedule a service visit to troubleshoot this issue further.  If you could verify for me the address on the account as well as the PIN# and last 4 of social and provide a phone number the technician can best reach you at I can try to set that up from here.

I mean this is just a guess, but if your power level is that high, its possible you have a signal amplifier somewhere and thats causing the issue. They start to have problems as they get closer to the end of their life span. However, most amps increase the signal by 10dB so you might just be able to disconnect and be better off.

Ok thanks a bunch!  I will go see if there is one there and disconnect and see if  it makes a difference...

Ok, I disconnected the amplifier and this is my signal info now:

Downstream Value
Frequency 801000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 38.3 dB
Power Level -0.1 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 1
Frequency 37600000 Hz
Power 44.7 dBmV

My internet hasn't dropped yet, but it is lagging and speed isn't consistent.  Any help or info would be great!  Thanks.

Your signal levels look much better.

Try the speedtest under Internet Tools on your Cox page. Otherwise, I don't know where you live, but pick the closest test server to you here.

Speed is great. I assume your on Prefered or Premier? And wasn't your main problem random disconnects? Those better now too?

Preferred plan.  Yeah, it's still dropping, but doesn't seem to be as often.  This is so weird...
