Internet connection

I have to power cycle my modem at least twice a week to maintain my internet connection.  The problem seems to be getting worse and I would like to have the problem resolved.

Hi joeaz, what modem, router or gateway do you have?  Do you loose both wired and wireless internet connections?  Please give more details, thanks.

Hello joeaz,

We can help. Are you having this issue with a wireless connection or wired?

I had the very same issue for almost a year. Every single day I had to pull out the power and Ethernet and put them back in. My connection was lost everyday for about an hour until finally it gave up altogether. I had to call Cox who sent out a serviceman who determined to problem was the faulty cable itself. He repaired it(not replaced) by cutting 6'' off both ends and replacing the fastener. Now they want to charge me $75.00 for fixing their own cable when I was told if the problem was a Cox problem, that I wouldn't be charged. Plus, they never told me the price before sending the man out. That's what they did after I've been a customer for 9 years now. I am not going to pay. I am looking for another service provider. Good luck.

Both although most obvious on wireless connection. For example, yesterday the download speed on a  wifi connected computer was 15 mbps when first turned on. this morning the speed was 0.7 mbps.  After rebooting the modem, the speed is 30 mbps.

joeaz, can you post what you are getting with a wired connection?  thanks, that will help narrow the problem a little.  Also, what hardware (gateway or modem/router) are you using?

Similar problem here, but I'm not sure the problem is with the modem. The internet connection goes down a couple of times a day. I have many devices including mac computers, iPads, and Apple TV. The router is a current model Airport Extreme. Sometimes one or more devices will fail to acquire an internet connection on startup, but other devices that are already connected and active continue to work. I can usually fix the problem for all devices by restarting the modem. Occasionally, I must also unplug the router and plug it back in after the modem restarts. That always works.

Also, on the iPads, I can usually regain a connection by resetting the iPad. No modem restart is required. I haven't found a similar solution with the Mac computers. In all cases, my network connection is fine, and my devices can still communicate with each other when the internet connection is down.

Modem is a Cisco dpq3212. All Macs running the latest version of El Capitan. All iPads running current version of iOS.

::chuckle:: It's hard to help everyone if your posting on the same thread. "Internet going down" is not a trend, it's a localized problem. It would be like saying there is a trend of people getting splinters. Each situation is going to be different. Please make your own threads and we can address the issues in kind.

@greyworm One think you should check is the DHCP lease of the WAN IP on the Airport Extreme. Someone found that by default it's set to 7 days when it should be set to 1 day.

I also can fix the problem for all devices by restarting the modem.  Just not a very satisfactory solution when we are paying big bucks ever month for internet service.

Hi joeaz, have you considered scheduling to have a tech come out to investigate the issue?
