Email's disappearing from My Inbox

Randomly new emails are dropping out of my Inbox on Webmail.  They are not going into the Trash, just gone, after I read them from what I can tell, but I guess I wouldn't know if they disappeared and I hadn't read them.  It first happened yesterday when I checked my email through my client (Thunderbird) when I got home.  None of the emails I left in my inbox via Webmail downloaded.

Email clients like Thunderbird download your emails out of webmail and onto your system by default.  I suspect if you check Thunderbird you'll find your messages there.  I'd suggest changing the account settings to either leave a copy of the server, use IMAP, or remove the account settings and stick strictly with webmail if that is what you prefer to use.

Nope , sorry, but I am very adept with my settings.  I purposely set Thunderbird to delete the messages from the Cox server when I d/l at home.  That way I can read my emails during the day at work on Webmail and then have them permanently on Thunderbird at home and then start the new day fresh at work with Webmail again.  The ONLY way possible would be if my cat was checking my email at home during the day, which would mean they would be in Thunderbird anyway.  I lost 11 emails from yesterday (probably more because I didn't check until almost 10pm and I had ZERO emails to d/l at home), but 11 was what was in Webmail when I left work.  I lost 4 this morning, ironically enough one was the Cox Premier Internet Speed Bump Email.  The one offering to switch to the new Modem.  It's gone.  Also lost some Bill notifications, which is a monster pain, but fixable.  I checked all Webmail folders and they are not there.  It hasn't happened again yet today, hopefully that holds up.

It may be worth checking still to see if the emails are turning up in Thunderbird or if it is running in the background somewhere.  Don't forget also if you have anti-virus installed it also acts as an email server proxy which can do interesting things too.

One easy way to check is to change your password and only update it on one client and see if the problem continues. Also, using IMAP, since its a whole separate server, might also work. Last, you might try switching clients, and see if that works.

Sadly and embarrassingly enough, I've traced the problem to a hack.  Email/Paypal hack to be precise.  Luckily it wasn't too bad, but a great reminder that no matter how vigilant you are about password redundancy, etc, you can always go one step better.  Thank you all for the advise and support.
