What's the deal with this COX digital conversion?

In short:

To reclaim frequency spectrum currently being used to deliver about 60 analog TV channels (an outdated technology). This equals 360MHz of spectrum, which accounts for about 1/3 of the entire capacity of 1GHz that Cox has available. Cox will use that reclaimed capacity to increase its digital TV channel offerings, expand its VOD service, but mostly, to free up spectrum for DOCSIS 3.1, an emerging Gigabit platform for Hybrid Fiber Cable (HFC) Internet Service.

No, it's for having trolls ask sophomoric questions.

My hope is that Cox will stop over-compressing the HD video and give us a higher bitrate on HD channels, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hi Digital,

Up to this point, Cox has been providing both an analog and a digital broadcast feed. A digital channel takes less bandwidth to get to your home than a non-digital or analog channel. Making the switch to all-digital allows Cox to utilize bandwidth more efficiently; we'll be able to add more HD channels, increase internet speeds, and add new products.

Once the transition to all-digital is complete, every TV must have digital equipment such as a mini box, CableCARD, or Advanced TV Receiver to receive the full TV Essential channel lineup. For more information on this change and your Cox digital equipment options, visit Cox.com/GoAllDigital or contact us at 844-239-2224.
