Contour Whiring sound

We have recently replaced an older HD DVR box with the contour box. Whenever you turn the Contour box on, there is a whiring sound that begins. Sometimes the whiring sound will start up when the box is off and we have not turned the device on. Is this a normal sound?

My best guess from what you're describing is that you may be hearing the internal hard drive spinning up from sleep mode.  If you're not seeing any other issues I'd say it's perfectly fine.
