Contour 9865hdc box won't change channels on power up

I recently got the Contour system with one Record-6 DVR unit and two non-DVR boxes. Everything is OK except that the DVR unit will not change channels or open the guide for the first 20 to 30 minutes after turning it on, either with the new Cox remote or my correctly programmed Logitech Harmony 700. After a while the DVR box will resume proper operation and change channels. The other two boxes are fine as soon as they're turned on. What's up with this bad behavior?

Hi BasysAZ,

That must be very frustrating for you and your family! I’m so sorry you’ve been dealing with this since you installed Contour Whole Home DVR.

I think Domino might be on the right track. It is possible that adjusting the brightness and/or backlight settings on your TV may help the remote better communicate with the receiver. Some TV displays—LCD displays in particular—throw off a lot of noise from the CCFL backlight, especially within a few minutes of turning it on. Some TVs emit a frequency of light similar to the IR from the remote, preventing the IR eye on the receiver from recognizing commands from the remote.

Try this test:
1. Verify the “Cable” button on the remote blinks when the Guide button is pressed.
2. Turn off the TV.
If, with the TV off, the “REMOTE” light on the receiver blinks when a button is pressed, the issue is likely the IR conflict.

To resolve the IR conflict, look for settings in your TV menu that control the Ambient Light Sensor. This is sometimes called Automatic Picture Control or Optimized Power Control (OPC). Turning this feature OFF or adjusting the Brightness or Backlight settings may help.

Please let me know!

Try it with your TV off. (Seriously.)

Becky, thanks for the more detailed description.  It's always good to know the rationale behind an empirical fix and what you describe sounds plausible.  The setup I'm having trouble with has the DVR HDMI out into a Sony A/V Receiver and then into a Sony TV, so I wasn't sure what effect turning off the TV would have.  For the record, the other two boxes go directly into Vizio TVs.

However, the setup in question worked fine when I started it up this morning after being off overnight.  Maybe something about the morning ambient light in the room versus darker evenings?  Nonetheless, I'll go through your test and settings recommendations and see how that works.

Well imagine my surprise yesterday evening when, after turning on the DVR box-A/V receiver-TV and finding it stuck on the last tuned channel, I turned off just the 5-year old Sony KDL-52W4100 LCD TV -- and could change channels on the DVR box!!  After 20 minutes or so everything was working nominally, so the startup radiation issue looks like the root cause of the problem.

I couldn't find the precise settings that Becky recommended changing on the TV setup menu, but will now RTFM to see where they may be.

Thanks to both Becky and Domino for the right answer and the rationale behind it.

Start with the "PICTURE SETTINGS" beginning on page 32 of your manual.

You'd think that would be the spot, but I actually found the "Automatic Picture (Screen) Light Control" under General Settings->Light Control on page 42.  Turning that off seems to have solved the problem.
